However, swipe a magnet over a disc (Blu-Ray) the data is still there. Drop it, the data is still there. Materials used? Cheap, light and you can burn it yourself. 10 Discs @ 50gig each, you will have 500gig of data in the space of a hard drive. Sorry, but I prefer a disc over something mechanical that could break down at any time. |

i believe the only reason it hasn't hurt the sale of burnable dvd's is the fact dvd rippers are not commonly known by regular people and the sale of downloadable content is just starting to become popular. our future will more than likely consist of a main server in it with every bit of data for the entire house with every picture, movie, music and what ever they can think of. i honestly could see it within the next 5-10 years becoming normal as well which is the crazy thing. it should be pretty awesome. just think a sling media type box that would wirelessly send all of our music and videos to our cars... no more ipods or clutter inside the car.... i know i'm getting a little carried away

This makes me wonder. I work at Target and I think I have seen blank Blu disc but no HD-DVD. Now we do not sell any burners for Blu or HD and we do not sell computers in the store either. I will have to check tomorrow night when I work, but I am fairly sure that we do carry blu but no HD. The blu pack in only like a 3 pack of disc.

It just does npt make sense to burn stuff into a format that holds less data than BD disks do. From a business point of view, and if I were backing stuff on disks (which I do sometimes), I rather go with the format that holds the most, which is Blu-ray, and will always be Blu-ray. As soon as the 3-layer HD-DVD disk comes out, we will likely see a 3-layer BD that will hold an amazing 70GB's, if not more.
Fact is, HD-DVD's suck for data. |

Is it simply that they are pricing them at 60% of BD-R to match the 60% of capacity? |

Do you really think that the average person doesn't at the very least know about dvd ripping software?. There has been free dvd rippers available on the net in one form or another for at least the last 5 years, probably longer. |

I was reading an article last week I believe it was that stated the BD players are not able to play BD-R or BD-RE that Sony only allowed this to happen for a short period while companies were still working out the kinks on authoring disks. So if this is true then how are we supposed to use a BRD burner to make home video conversions etc and play them on the standalone players? I have also read that Toshiba has introduced all their notebooks with HD DVD drives in tehm for 08 and some include HD DVD burners. So again where does this leave those wanting to burn home movies to BRD when they are apparently not able to work on the standalone players.
