NY Ripper, like Don't Torture a Duckling and The Psychic, has a more traditional narrative than The Beyond, City of the Living Dead, or The House By the Cemetery. It is as violent as the latter three, however, much more so than his giallos. I would say it's controversial because it's considered "misogynistic." It's probably his last "good" film, but more typical of giallos in general than what Fulci is best known for.

My Fulci top five:
1. The Beyond
2. Zombi 2
3. City of the Living Dead
4. Don't Torture a Duckling
5. New York Ripper

maidenbrain pretty much summed it up. This has always been one of my favorite Fulci movies, and it's a must have. Not as good as The Beyond (in my oppinion one of the coolest horrormovies ever made), but if you're into Fulci's style this is a sure bet.

It's very sexual and gory (watch out for the "splitting nipple in two on naken prostitute with a razorblade" scene... ), and you won't be dissapointed with this one.

Blind buy it!!!

I'll buy it but I really hope they've corrected the misplaced scene from the Anchor Bay (and Blue Underground reissue) DVD. Extras look a bit lacklustre compared to the Scandinavian and French DVDs. Stephen Thrower's book Beyond Terror is worth owning but horribly pricey as its out of print

Yeah, aside from the "controversiality of it, it was probably my second fav film of his (fav is City of the Living Dead), and an excellent giallo.

One of my favorite giallos. Though not quite as good as Don't Torture A Duckling, its my second favorite of Fulci's films.

1. The Beyond
2. Zombie 2 (Shriek Show release)
3. City of the Living Dead (on VHS under the title Gates of Hell)
4. Cat in the Brain/Nightmare Concert
5. House by the Cemetary
+ New York Ripper!

Nice list! The Beyond was actually my introduction to "non US" horror movies. And I've been a changed man (or boy...) ever since...

Love the drill scene in City of the Living Dead by the way. And the splinter to the eye scene in Zombie 2... Ah, how I miss Fulci.

FULCI LIVES!!!!

This is kind of embarrasing actually, but I haven't seen Don't Torture A Duckling.

You say this is your favorite Fulci movie? Even better than The Beyond? How come it's so good?

Long time since I saw Don't Torture a Duckling, but it' really good. It's more a pure giallo than horror. I don't want to spoil anything, so just check it out.

I felt The Beyond was slightly hindered by its budget. I never had that issue with NY Ripper though. With a lot of Fulci's films, unfortunately, they didn't seem to live up to the hype, NY Ripper exceeded all of my expectations though. One of my favorite giallo villains too.

I was thinking of Duckling, but cool to see your views on New York Ripper as well. And I agree. It's a great movie.

But The Beyond is still my favorite Fulci flick. The ending alone is making this a classic.

I'm surprised (and disappointed) the recent Grindhouse issue of The Beyond didn't get a blu. I'd also really like to see City Of The Living Dead get a blu, its a great film and the existing DVDs leave me undecided. The ultra grainy Anchor Bay is a bit hard on the eyeballs but the Italian No Shame edition looks like the grain is too heavily suppressed leaving skin tones a bit like plastic

Yeah, I'd have to agree. The Beyond didn't. New York Ripper did. Ignoring what made it controversial, it was a very good film. Very solid and well done.

They do take forever. I have Pieces and in an article about the film in Rue Morgue magazine it said that the film was in development for 7 years! Anyway people, you need to check out the Grindhouse Releasing's of Cat in the Brain. Not only for the film. Which is great. But for the extras which contain a 45 minute interview with the man himself and a featurette of his legendary appearance at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors con.
