Bought the black box set from Amazon last month when it was cheap and just now noticed this. Looks like they ripped off the old J-card, with a good chunk of the packaging along with it, and hot-glued on a now non-removable new card with the 2023 digital code expiration. Anybody else's set arrive like this? I can live with it for the price, especially since it took me a month to even notice, but whoa.

Mine has something like this at the top of the box. Looking closely (at least at mine), the "ripped" portion is from the old J-card and not the actual black box. It doesn't really bother me, and I can't see it unless I pull the top of the new card upwards.

I'd go an extra $10 for that.

My box had the info printed directly onto the box.

I guess I have a revised or reissued box as Spectre disc is included which it wasn’t when this box first came out. So glad to get the codes too.

Fantastic deal from Amazon.

The Goldfinger analysis is done over on blahray.
The scary thing is the old 1988 4:3 analog audio only Laserdisc is the best freaking audio there is:
https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/2022/0...nger-1964.html

I can't believe it. I rarely popped this disc on except to check the open framing occasionally. I knew the audio had hiss intact but hadn't directly compared it against the later versions and the Criterion until now. The really crazy part is this disc has a defective left track which is just noise and hum so it's really only single channel audio on the right analog track. Because of the fuzzier over-brightened 1.33 transfer and goofy left audio track you'd think it wasn't worth much.

With this being the case I'm looking for a clean copy of the equivalent VHS release in the hopes of it being the identical master and thus carrying the same untouched audio in hifi.

Got OHMSS on ATM. What the hell did thy do to the mono track on the Blu-Ray? It sounds atrocious. There's been so much noise reduction applied to it that at times (particularly the dialogue) it sounds incredibly distorted and shrill. I actually switched to the 5.1 mix partway through because, while it is revisionist and has clearly had a touch of NR itself, it sounds a lot clearer.

On my copy of OHMSS, the volume on the mono track also dropped significantly a couple of times. I had to turn the volume way up each time, so that by the end, the volume level, which I usually have around 40, was at 77!

That said, the 5.1 track buries John Barry's magnificent score under sound effects, many of which are not even present in the original mix.

The mono is the only way to go on this, one of my top 3 favorite films of all time.

If fans can put mono from laserdiscs onto Blu-ray masters in their basements, labels can do it in billion-dollar studios. And then they wonder why bootlegging happens.

I finally got around to watching the 'white box set" version I got off of Amazon for $60. Great value but surprised at the packaging. No booklet. No indication of who is playing James Bond for what movie (disc art is just the name of the film). No bonus disc. There was a flap attached that listed the movies but it is such a small font I couldn't read it. Strangely, some of the discs have an advertisement for the Bond 50 collection! My wife even asked if this was a bootleg!

Is the bonus disc the same disc from the Bond 50 box?

Is it true there is a US cut of Dr No in which Bond fires all 6 bullets into the body of Professor Dent? I have read there is and wondered if it is included in the US collection. I saw Dr No in the cinema in the UK on Monday and it was the UK cut I am used to with 2 bullets to end Prof D.

Is there any indication that the Bond films are going to get fresh restorations anytime soon? The Lowry "restorations" were done not just over 10 years but in some cases, over 15 years.

The only thing hinting it could happen soon is that 2022 is the 60th anniversary of James Bond films. They might also just wait because maybe the MGM sale is too recent and they won't have had time to do this kind of 4k UHD boxset yet. Hopefully they announce it this year.

I’ve seen a total of 3 James Bond films. I always enjoyed them but haven’t taken the time to see more. I’ve seen maybe 2 episodes of the original Star Trek and liked them but never sought out more. I have a desire to start at the beginning and work my forward. What is the best Blu-ray set that’s available?

All the Blu-Rays are the same. The Black box, I think, has some extra features. But I'd just go for whichever you can get a deal on.

I'm still on DVD for Bond and holding out for a UHD set as I've seen them enough times for now.

Some people like specific Bond eras or actors, so unless you feel obliged to view them all, it might even be a good idea to catch them on streaming and then decide which ones you want. I have less than a dozen of the Bond films, cherry-picking the ones I liked most.

Similarly I was once considering getting the entire TOS, but I got Season 1&2, that's almost 45 hours of Trek. Also, after a certain point series tend to become repetitive, especially when they don't have an overarching progressive storyline.

The biggest limitation is finding the time needed to watch everything, followed by the space to store all these discs, which one may not return to as much as one thinks, because there's always more stuff to get.
