Given Kino's rather elastic concept of what qualifies as a film noir, wouldn't 1957's "The Girl in the Kremlin" be a possibility? It's a kind of hopped-up hodgepodge about Stalinist conspiracy starring Lex Barker and Zsa Zsa Gabor (in a dual role, no less). The picture was distributed by Universal but I don't know if they actually retain the rights. Saw it once and it certainly held my attention.

Here's hoping it gets a stand alone release from Kino somewhere down the line...

KL Insider--

Are you able to say which of the titles have not been legally cleared? I'm asking because I noticed you just did the same thing with a bunch of noir titles. The up side would be that whiners like myself would shut up and stop bothering you about releasing these titles.

Thanks!

I gave the 4K UHD of "Hard Target" a watch, first time I'd seen it in a long time. The presentation is absolutely gorgeous and I'd forgotten just how much ass that movie kicks. I think it may be John Woo's best American film, certainly neck and neck with "Face/Off".

Van Damme acquits himself well under the direction of Woo, Wilford Brimley as a Cajun is unforgettable, and having Lance Henriksen and Arnold Vosloo as the two villains is almost an embarrassment of riches. Either one of them could have carried the film as the solo villain, but the two of them going back and forth like a tag team of hilariously over-the-top psychopathic behavior is what really turns this film into a genre classic.

That Fox fire destroyed lots of titles including 4 of the first 5 Warner Oland Charlie Chan films. The MGM vault fire seems to have taken the last known print of London After Midnight. It’s really depressing if you do a search of lost films. Many early Technicolor films now only exist in b&w prints and the same is true with early widescreen films only existing in standard format. But every once in a while something miraculous happens like the discovery of the nearly complete Metropolis.

I would love John Frankenheimer's "SECONDS" (1966) starring Rock Hudson on 4K UHD.
I know Criterion released the Blu-ray but would love Kino to get it.

I can still remember the 2008 Universal fire And of course the recent fire in Brazil. Things have improved but barely.

So much has sadly been lost.

Besides London After Midnight, I dream of someone some day finding the reels of F.W. Murnau's unauthorized Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde adaptation, Der Januskopf. Not only did it have Conrad Veidt in the lead, but Bela Lugosi also appeared in a supporting role. Chances are against it, though, as it does not appear to have played much outside of Germany, and the last prints were most likely destroyed in fires during the war.

But then, sometimes miracles do happen. Prints do turn up places where nobody has thought of looking before, like the more or less complete version of Metropolis, which turned up in a South-American film archive; or the original version of Dreyer's Jeanne d'Arc, which was long thought to be lost when a print was discovered in a Norwegian asylum. And then there are the cases of films mislabeled. The sole surviving print of one of Tod Browning's and Lon Chaney's best movies, The Unknown, turned up in the national French film archive. It was labeled correctly, but due to the name on the cannisters, it was placed among a large stack of other reels with unknown content, until someone some day made the connection and checked.

I understand Lance has been in a ton of movies over the years, but it doesn't seem like nearly enough for me. I love the guy, his role here and in Stone Cold are two favorites, having Vosloo in this and Forsythe in Stone Cold like you said is almost too much of a good thing, but I'll take it. Great, fun movie, I too watched it again for the first time in awhile and it made me long for a Surving the Game release from Warner.

Dang! Not only are these among the very best titles in the Kino catalog, but a couple are among the best movies ever made, period. Hope these (and many of the other recent adds) are only being phased out for new editions.

Wow, lot of Mario Bava . Interesting with the announcement of specs for Kino’s new 2K scan of Planet of the Vampires.

Hopefully someone else is picking them up (and that it may result in a US release of the Rabid Dogs version of Kidnapped).

Those are some pretty significant deletions. I’m sure a few will resurface, but can never be certain if or when.

Sounds like Bava is being discontinued from Kino.

My only issue with many of those releases were the lack of the Italian audio but otherwise most were excellent releases.
