Less than a year ago I was asking the Kino Lorber Insider about The Coca-Cola Kid. I am thrilled that it is coming to FCE Blu-ray!

Interesting that MGM now hold the Australian rights because at the time of it's release at cinemas (where it failed) and VHS it was released by Roadshow. I suppose as Roadshow got more involved with investing in film productions with Warner Bros. they let the rights to lots of films lapse.

Also, this film is another example of what a great actor Eric Robert is. His performances from King of Gypsies, Raggedy Man, Star 80, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Runaway Train and The Coca Cola Kid is a run unmatched by very few actors.

This will be a Day One buy for me.

I don’t believe that MGM holds Australian rights.

It's funny, I listened to two podcasts with Jonathan Hertzberg as the guest, walked into The Archive and picked up slipcover edition copies of Jeremy and Walk the Edge! I thought they were sold out.

You may have gotten the last copies of those! We have posted on our socials to let people know when a sold out (online) edition is still available at the Archive.

I nearly forgot to check the VS website on Sunday for the new Partner Label releases. Had a quick look, and the titles I'm interested in include The Coca Cola Kid. Love the front cover artwork as well.

Starring a very good looking Jonathan Schaech in his prime, in various states of undress, if that's your thing. MGM eventually put out a bare-bones scope-MOD DVD-R, but it could really use an upgrade.
I would love to see an obscure late 90s Australian film called Hotel De Love hit blu-ray. I don't know if it's up FCE's alley, but it is a charmer. Any fans?

I remember The Coca-Cola Kid as being a somewhat surprise indie cinema hit when it opened. I know it actually played some multiplexes both in Florida, where I'm from, and in NJ while I was visiting my aunt and uncle for a couple months while going to summer school in NYC. I can't recall if I ever saw it.

And everyone needs to buy Other Music from VS's other partner label Factory 25 because if it does well, then my doc may be the next one up! (I know, shameless.)

MGM only has US distribution rights inherited from distributor Cinecom (which later became engulfed into the M.C.E.G/Orion units that MGM later purchased). Even though Roadshow only held theatrical distribution in Australia, the Aussie producers owns all other distribution rights and have licensed some of them to Umbrella.

Looking forward to The Coco-Cola Kid! FCE definitely the best of the partner labels at VinSyn in my book.

Not sure who has the license currently. But speaking of Eric Roberts... I'd love to see FCE snag and release The Pope Of Greenwich Village.

It looks like Shout may have let that license expire...

Yeah, so Born to Win is a banger.

I love the NYC-ness of it, the loser lifestyle showcased, the early De Niro, and maybe for the first time ever, I was attracted to Karen Black. Great release.

Yes! A terrific and underrated film. Hopefully we get yet another interview with JB as the one included with Rancho Deluxe is great.

I'm loving this streak of films from Eastern European directors. I'm in for all of them. I'd love to see Forman's Taking Off, Skolimowski's The Adventures of Gerard, and Wajda's Gates to Paradise follow suit.

Superb news! A really excellent choice. The film is a perfect complement to Thornburg's book (seemingly OOP again after being reissued 20 years ago).
A previous Twilight Time release if I recall. Any chance of rescuing Melvin and Howard from the same TT limbo? 😉

The novel (and his other work) is on the excellent library app Hoopla

I hope Chilly Scenes of Winter is on the docket. On the Yard, another incredible film with John Heard, is getting a Blu soon

More Skolimowski anywhere would be great. There was a limited edition box of his Polish work that goes for insane prices now. I’ve seen the Polish Film Institute’s restored prints of Walkover and Identification Marks: None, and they look incredible

Taking Off is stuck in the same legal hell as several other early 70’s Universal films (Play it as it Lays and Red Sky at Morning)

I remember reading (maybe on this forum?) that the issue with Taking Off is the musical performances that open the film. No idea if that's true.

I believe it is. There is no documentation regarding that song, and Universal doesn’t want to chance a lawsuit. I’ve seen a post-2008 35mm print of it that looked gorgeous, so at least the elements are fine.
