While a director's cut of The Keep would be nice, I don't need. What I need is the classic version in HD. That shouldn't be too difficult to do seeing as how we are getting really obscure films found in someone's garage in HD now.

I hope they release The Shootist since they were unwilling to license it out for whatever reason.
Might seem that way, but on the other hand Paramount has also increased the number of releases on their own, so it might just mean we'll get a lot more Paramount content to 4k UHD's in a smaller amount of time. Maybe they want to accelerate releases while sales of UHD's are still strong enough. I could be wrong but I think that's one way to interpret the situation.

Would they really do Once Upon a Time in the West on UHD in the Presents line? They just did a Western, and it was only the second in the entire line (so like a ratio of 1 per year). If they did do it would probably be years away imo. Also based on hearing from KLI higher in the thread that they (Paramount) wanted to keep their John Wayne films, maybe they intend to dig more into those first.

Maybe I'm totally wrong here but I think Once Upon a Time in the West sounds like a perfect title to license to Kino if I were Paramount. They showed great love to the other 3 Sergio Leone Westerns on the format, and they know they can sweeten the deal for Kino by conceding that one.

Some time ago in another thread someone had collected a bunch of posts from different label owners and employees making contradictory statements in different threads over who owned Four Flies on Grey Velvet in the US. Does anyone remember where KLI stood on the matter? Did he believe Paramount owned it or that they didn't? I can't find those messages anymore.

If KLI had indicated Paramount had it, then I'm sure rumors regarding Four Flies potentially coming from Kino will be flying around (forgive the pun) for the next few months.

Ya, it's always been Mann stopping THE KEEP, but you have to wonder how he has so much power over the studio. Does he have final say on physical media? Was that in his contract back in 1983? It's not like he was a huge name back then, and surely isn't as big a name as he once was now. Paramount put out a VHS and a laserdisc way back, he didn't stop those. Suddenly he has all this power.

Yes, I know he hates the film as is, but I'm guessing that Paramount just wants to keep him happy, or not suffer his wrath, so Paramount purposely just sits on their OWN film until Mann is gone. Just speculating.

It's all so strange. The film has always been average, but it has its fans, and it's not really an embarrassing film at all. Yes, rushed out after many production issues, so I can see why he may look at it as unfinished, but it has some really good stuff in it. Why he fights so hard to keep it squashed just brings more attention to it.

Hilarious that he didn't stop the recent Australian DVD. Maybe down under just told him to get lost.

Michael Curtiz's The Scarlet Hour is also high on my list of forgotten film noirs. The forthcoming Aussie release definitely makes me hopeful for its North American debut too.

You could be right, I just feel it's a major prestige kind of title that I'd be surprised if Paramount licensed out. If Paramount were to release it themselves i have to imagine it would be in the Presents line simply because most of their titles with newer 4K scans/restorations get released under that line. Kino did say they have some major titles, so I guess we'll have to see how major they are. There are different tiers of course that can still be considered major, so it'll be interesting to see what Paramount is willing to license out.

I definitely feel there's been a shift in their philosophy compared to just a year or so ago when they took back titles from Criterion like Days of Heaven, and Don't Look Now that would obviously not sell a ton directly from them. There's also been a noticeable slow-down in the amount of catalog waves we've seen from Paramount, so I think whatever momentum they had going with catalog releases has perhaps stalled, and now are shifting back to boutique licensing. Kino got a big film deal, Arrow is rumored to have a deal, and they are likely licensing several films to Criterion too since they are putting out Virgin Suicides in 4K in July.

You're right. There's definitely tiers even when discussing major titles.

Tomorrow is going to be very interesting as it might give us an indication of what "level" of titles we can expect.

Still betting the first UHD announcement is Death Wish. I thought it was odd Vinegar was putting out 2 in 4k but not 1, made me at first think Paramount was doing it or intended to do it themselves, but based on this deal it makes me think Kino was already negotiating for it.

Death Wish II isn’t Paramount if I’m not mistaken. That’s probably why they didn’t get 1.
