Who owns Vanishing Point (1971)? Is this a Fox title?

NOTE: This is regarding the "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" reissue (co-billed with its sequel "...and the Girl Bombs"). Bikini Machine was STRETCHED on the earlier Blu release.

But KLI later responded and asked which of the two films had the stretched AR error. The poster then responded verifying it was Bikini Machine which has the stretching error.

KLI then THANKED that answer. Which I hope is a GOOD sign they will try to fix it. I am no tech guy, but I doubt it is a huge issue for a lab tech to adjust this with a pretty easy fix. Obviously it got screwed up originally by someone at MGM hitting something slightly wrong to mess it up to begin with. And I know people have been able to fix Shout's "Explorers" squished image on their own using their own home equipment.

And also remember, Kino went way out of their way to replace the two missing seconds in "A Comedy of Terrors", something they could have just easily ignored as it wasn't that huge a problem (to some), but I think the AR on this one, being the ENTIRE film, is a much bigger problem, and probably even easier to adjust in the lab.

Anyway, I remain hopeful Kino will come through and get it fixed. I have both Kino Blu separates already, and held on to the old MGM DVD with the non-stretched image just because, but I'd rebuy this double-feature Kino Blu release if it were fixed, and then give away the old MGM DVD of "Bikini Machine", which was the only correct version, but non-anamorphic.

I think Kino will do the right thing here. It's early enough, discs haven't been pressed yet (as far as I know) so no costly 'replacement disc' situation needed, it's a title that COULD be delayed a little if needed to fix that stretching on the first film (which shouldn't be hard to do by any skilled lab tech person, maybe just a flip of a switch), and Kino would definitely sell a LOT more of it if they did correct it, not by just new buyers of these films, but I'm betting all of us who bought it before, will surely re-buy it if were fixed. I'll be first in line to rebuy.

Thank you for that insight in giving us a better picture into the issue with the US rights! Hopefully they sort it out someday.

The Region B [locked] release from the UK is still available and contains a remastered version of the US cut of the film.

What sorts of factors go in to helping you determine which titles get released in both formats versus DVD only? I mean, how well you think a title will sell, of course, but what informs that?

Paramount must play some serious hardball with foreign rights holders. I can remember people asking for Four Flies on Grey Velvet and Blood and Roses 20 years ago to a Paramount insider on DVD Talk. Seems much hasn’t change. Makes sense that Shout had to release the cut version of Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell and an older transfer of Captain Kronos when a newer one existed. Paramount doesn’t get along with overseas terrorists.

Is it true that Once Upon a Time in the West is now with Disney? Read that below but the original source isn't linked to.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=143

If correct this is doubly tragic.

Once Upon a Time in the West is Paramount and always has been.

Once Upon a Time in America is now owned by Disney via Fox who acquired the rights to the Regency Entertainment library.

Well; looks like it's not there anymore.

I might be imagining things, but I'm almost certain it was listed as UHD about a month or two ago.

With the possibility of some Republic titles, I wonder if that might include Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time, which has never even had an official DVD release. (Republic released the movie on VHS and laserdisc, so I guess Paramount would control it now, but not sure.)

Olive released Part 2 back when Frank Tarzi was running acquisitions at the label if I'm not mistaken. Also if I'm not mistaken, Republic has the rights to both so it would seem Olive would've picked up the third film during that period but for some reason they didn't. Mr. Tarzi is now at Kino so it stands to reason they may consider picking it up this time - if it's available. Not a very good film but I'd grab a copy just to complete the trilogy.

Yes it's the weakest film of the trilogy but i would be interested in seeing it in HD. One of the few things i like about it is the lighting.

I think you've misunderstood the BFI's announcement. They continue to wait for the new 4K restoration being done by Paramount but, as they don't know when they can deliver the product, they've decided they cannot keep customer's money indefinitely or continue taking orders when they can't estimate a delivery date. It hasn't been outright cancelled, it is just indefinitely postponed until the restoration is completed.

Hopefully Kino do release some of Paramount's Bogdanovich films though. Paper Moon is obviously a masterpiece, well overdue a Blu-Ray release in the States but it would be even better if it just jumps up to 4K UHD. And Daisy Miller is itself a beautiful film, also in dire need of a restoration and Blu-Ray release.

Snake Eyes would be great. For me, it's perhaps De Palma's last (to date! we live in hope...) great film and it would be incredible if anyone could restore the original tidal wave ending

I wonder if Max Ophuls' Caught might be one of these. It has had a 4K restoration and the old Olive release is OOP. For the other one...The Miracle of Morgan's Creek? Kino have given us some Sturges in the past

If I had to choose just one Paramount-owned 50s film it would be the Frank Tashlin/Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis film Artists and Models which - like most of their films - hasn't had a good HD release anywhere.

For the 60s', there was a restoration of Robert Bresson's Une Femme Douce done a few years ago so hopefully that finally makes it onto disc courtesy of Kino.

I'd also love to see Mikhail Kalatazov's (The Cranes are Flying, I Am Cuba) final film - an odd international co-production starring Sean Connery, Peter Finch and Claudia Cardinale called The Red Tent - but I'm not sure what materials Paramount would have for it.

And like everybody else, I'd love Once Upon a Time in the West on UHD.

So, I'll have the pleasure of seeing the premiere of a new restoration of Bernardo Bertolucci's masterpiece The Conformist at Il Cinema Ritrovato next month. Paramount released it on DVD but Raro somehow released it on Blu-Ray so I'm not sure if Paramount somehow lost the rights but a UHD of that would be incredible. Days of Heaven is the other big one I'd love on UHD from Paramount's catalog. Criterion lost the rights a couple of years ago.

Other films I'd love to see on Blu-Ray - Robert Benton's Bad Comapny with Jeff Bridges, Louis Malle's Pretty Baby, Peter Bogdanovich's Daisy Miller

Hoping for at least one of: Jerzy Skolimowski's The Lightship, Frank Perry's Compromising Positions, American Gigolo, Children of a Lesser God, Witness

Paramount apparently has some rights to Terence Davies' Gena Rowlands-starring The Neon Bible and it would be a dream to finally get that released.

I'd also like Bogdanovich's The Thing Called Love - think Inside Llewyn Davis but with country music and a very odd but effective final performance by River Phoenix.

Some thougths? Maybe Falling in Love if I had to pick (but would love Coast to Coast)

I would think they look at box office performance and general reviews/interest as big factors (though I could be wrong). Cost of restoration is another. Most of the ones I posted above I've never even heard of, but that also goes for lots of boutique releases (not just KINO) IMO, but you do find some nice gems along the way when you buy them.
