there should be a deal where you trade in your hddvd machine and get half off a blurayplayer. They have those deals all the time for switching software. Then take those machines out and destroy them get them off the market.

We have had this discussion. At least I made a point of bringing it up several times. The solution (to me) is a combo player. They can keep their current stock of movies and migrate to blu-ray. Thus only loosing the cost of an existing HD-DVD only player and not hundreds in movie costs.

Some argue this will only help HD-DVD to thrive. But my point is that when Paramount finally gives it up and goes back to blu-ray, the point becomes moot. BECAUSE HD-DVD WILL NO LONGER BE MADE. So what if it helps sustain it a little longer? The long term plan is to phase it out.

Maybe I am saying it wrong. No one seems to understand my point.

I once heard some very odd and rather true advice.

You can't always believe what a company boasts of themselves. Listen to what the competition has to say about them. If the strength of the competition is bad mouthing the other guy, you go with the other guy.

People don't bother to bad mouth competion of no threat to them. They focus on the strongest opposer. Much in the same reason Christianity is always under attack by Evolutionists, politicians, other religious groups, etc.

Get my point?

He can't stop saying BD or Blu-Ray. With the talk about BD-50 being science fiction I can't stop to think how low can they go. With their crappy Dual format discs that are crappy and even stopping people from buying those discs because people that own HD-DVD have ran into problems with those discs that should have a better quality control check.
Is it the same reason we can't stop talking about Amir, or HD-DVD Fanboys? :P

Toshiba is basically locked together with Microsoft through the Zune and HD DVD. That is hardly going to change until the very end of the "war" when they capitulate.

Samsung makes the iPod shuffle for Apple whilst competing directly with them.

Other iPods and the iPhone are made by Foxconn.
Interestingly, they also manufacture a lot of other stuff:
Among other things, Foxconn produces the Mac mini, the iPod and the iPhone for Apple Computer; Intel-branded motherboards for Intel Corp.; various orders for American computer retailers Dell, Inc. and Hewlett Packard; the Xbox 360 for Microsoft; the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 for Sony; the Wii for Nintendo, and cell phones for Motorola.[1][2] - from Wikipedia.

We get your point, but don't believe it would play out the same way you do. If combo-players exist, they will be more expensive (who wants to pay more?) Also, why would Paramount switch over to Blu-Ray in 18 months if everybody has dual-format players?

The idea here, is to FORCE studios to support BD-50s so we can get a higher quality product vs. a very sub-par version of a movie (constained to 30 GBs). This is already apparent in the fact that Blu-Ray movies contain MANY more lossless audio tracks than does HD-DVD. Why should Blu-Ray owners be subjected to crappy quality encodes due to space constraints? Dual-format players are BAD for this war. It's a bad compromise, because studios are immediately going to encode to whichever format costs them less. In the end, the consumer would lose.

This is no surprise. I've worked at Blockbuster for five years and I've seen a lot of damaged discs. BY FAR the ones that get DAMAGED the most are DUAL SIDED discs (either FF/WS or film/features). It's not because there are two sides vulnerable to damage. It's that the players damage the top side by making a ring just inside the edge. So watching one side damages the other. It's idiotic why they still make dual sided discs.

Sure is nice to have 25 gig on one side while HD can barely squeeze 15.

Well, one thing Apple and Sony have in common is the adoption and preferred use of AVC/H.264. Sure, HD DVD supports it as Blu-ray supports VC-1. But which is the most supported by the industry and broadcasters (especially in Europe)?

When iTunes hopefully starts selling content in HD, it will, due to bandwidth cost-benefit, most likely be 720p like the few HD podcasts available. This can easily be considered the little brother to Blu-ray.
