FF, was never a dark comic, they did have some dark story line but never as dark as some of the other comics out there.
It seem that since the Dark Knight, Hollywood wants all there comic book base movies to be "dark".

It's all about the all mighty $ they are sitting around a big oak table in a conference room somewhere and going "look, TDK was dark and that made so much money, that's what we need to do, let's make Superman dark now, we will make another billion"
