This was absolutely incredible! I honestly don’t think the original movie is all that good but this took everything that was good about it and left out all the bad. Exhilarating white knuckle tension at times, funny, and emotional. The IMAX footage was breathtaking. Tom Cruise is a legend.

I personally wouldn’t be surprised to learn that some evil hand at Scientology is at work to guarantee Cruise success after success, but…I’m not sure I mind when the movies are this good. Leah Remini can deal with it. Lol

And now in theaters, Top Gun: Maverick (additional color by Adam N.)

One motion picture that Stefan is super proud of from back in the day in that it represents his creative ability and showcases what color can really do for a film was Tony Scott’s Man on Fire.

The pluses,

The awesome flight scenes, Val Kilmer.

The minuses, oh boy, where do I begin?

[Show spoiler]The lines from the original movie that were repeated.
The shots from the original movie that were recreated.
The whole scenes from the original movie that were recreated.
The recycling of actual footage from the original movie for use as flashbacks.
The clichéd dialogue (good god, that fight scene between Mav and Roos in the air when Mav says they should just have it out right there? There was better dialogue than that in Batman & Robin.) Straight outta How Not to Write a Screenplay 101.
The undeveloped, clichéd, stock characters. Seemed like everyone was just an archetype. Straight outta How Not to Write a Screenplay 102. They had to make Jennifer Connelly a bartender?! Seriously?!
As others have mentioned, the mission's straight outta Star Wars. jesus christ, could they not come up with something original?! No. Instead we got HAN_MAN.
The third act. What's with turning Mav and Roos into a comedy double act?
Oh god, oh god, oh god.

Still, the flight scenes are awesome so, yeah, I'd recommend it just for those.

Only fitting that this be the movie that gets Cruise his first 100m opening, and deservedly so. After all, it was Top Gun that launched his star worldwide.

As for the movie itself, hands down the absolute best of ALL the blockbusters this year. And personally, my 2nd favorite movie of the year behind that zany, little flick with sausage fingers.

By far the best summer action blockbuster since Mad Max: Fury Road. A massive technical accomplishment, with aerial cinematography and flight sequences that absolutely dwarf everything that's come before it in that regard, all culminating in the most white-knuckle climax since the Death Star trench run in Star Wars. And outside of the dogfighting, Top Gun: Maverick greatly improves on the OG Top Gun by having a largely competent story filled with emotional character beats, anchored by the best dramatic work Tom Cruise has done since The Last Samurai. Yes, the writing of the supporting characters is a little thin, but the supporting cast is more than game to make the most out of their roles and screentime.

One of the best films of the year and certainly one of the greatest sequels ever made, far surpassing its predecessor.

If you're a fan of the original & the opening minute or two of Maverick doesn't put a massive grin on your face, you might want to go see a doctor.

I didn't think this was quite as amazing as some of the early reviews have said, but it was still pretty damn great & the aerial scenes were stunning. The 137 minutes flew by (no pun intended). Loved the use of the original Faltermeyer score & musical motifs throughout too.

Now, where's my Days of Thunder 2: Trickle?

I've seen Doctor Strange twice, as enjoyable as that movie is, Maverick soars above it.

Enjoyed it, 4/5, not as stellar as the first but did a great job defying expectations. My dad was a Navy pilot and only had 2 major gripes: he said a flag officer (Captain) would never fly a combat mission and he said the bar would have Marines sitting around waiting for someone to make the mistake of getting the bell rung to get a free round of drinks.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first movie but I liked this one WAY better than the first. I saw it in IMAX-so That helped.

I really enjoyed this. Just a fun movie. I had my kids watch the original this week to prep for tonight. Both were grinning ear to ear throughout Maverick.

The opening scene put a smile on my face.

Sure some of the dialogue could have been better but overall, it was a fun flick. I also liked how they incorporated Iceman. It was good to see Kilmer on screen.

With the use of flashbacks throughout, I’m kinda surprised that they didn’t throw on in to make the connection to Penny Benjamin being mentioned in passing in the first movie.

I will also say, the scene where
[Show spoiler]Hamm walks away from Mav on the beach
seemed comp’ed. I don’t know if it was green screened or what but for all the shots they got in camera that one seemed off to me.
