The only imitator I can think of is Fire Birds and that didn't turn out well. Iron Eagle actually came out before Top Gun.

I think the 80s-90s sequel machine probably would've killed Top Gun. Sequel has the same plot but larger budget. In the third movie, Maverick gets framed for a crime he didn't commit and only Iceman can bring him in. Fourth movie has the Russians and Americans teaming up for the ultimate mission and Maverick falls in love with a female Russian pilot.

I thought it was very silly that this movie treats Danger Zone and a montage of planes taking off like it's the Star Wars opening crawl. I understand paying respect to the original film, but the tone of that opening just doesn't match the rest of the movie. And it doesn't even lead into anything like the original, it just fades to black and we go to a different, much more appropriate opening scene.

Aside from some other weird creative choices, the movie is pretty entertaining and well-made. The script is boilerplate, but when it feels like half the big blockbusters these days don't even have a script I guess that's enough for people to hail it like it's the second coming.

Wow, what an awesome joyride!! Spectacular flying stunts/scenes and beautifully shot. My wife and I loved every minute of this movie and I can’t wait to watch it again. Teller was perfectly cast as Goose’s son and he totally embodied his dad.
[Show spoiler]Loved the scene between Mav and Iceman and I’m happy Kilmer was able to appear in the movie.

This is right up there with The Batman for me as the best two movies of the year so far. 5/5

I just saw it today, and it was a blast. One of the best movies I've seen in years.

I saw this movie at my local good old El Camino Real. Unfortunately my movie theater is still stuck in the 2000s, while the sound was good, the lack of LFE slam really hindered the experience.

If I were to see again, should I see in a IMAX or Dolby Cinema?

With the market the way it's been the last 2 months it would be a sandwich Ziploc.

This movie is better than it should be. I'm in for the 4K steel and more than likely International versions as well.

Watched it today in Dolby. It was quite the experience. Highly entertaining with some atypical (in a good way) intense action and great performances as well as directing, F/X, and sound design. It was interesting to see they added grain in post since this was seemingly shot digitally, but it looked pretty good and I almost thought it was shot on film. The Dolby Atmos sound design was also terrific. This has big potential to be reference picture and audio.

Between this and Stranger Things 4 I’m already emotionally exhausted, but in a good way.

Yes I picked my seat but I swear I didn’t intentionally pick that seat number or even realise it’s significance till finding my seat. Loved the movie btw.

[Show spoiler]How could it be Iceman's fault? There was no way he could've known that he would create the wash that caused Maverick's flat spin.

Huh? Every fighter pilot should be familiar with all the hazards of a fighter jet, especially jet wash. Jet wash has been known long before 1986. First of all Maverick shouldn’t have been that close to Icemans tail, and second Iceman should have left his flight path a different way.

Saw it last night. Great film with some fantastic action cinematography. Cruise looks really fit for his age.

By the way, the exchange between Maverick and Rooster towards the end was a brillinat one-liner for posterity.

[Show spoiler]Maverick: What the hell were you thinking?
Rooster: You told me not to think!

Sure some of the dialogue could have been better but overall, it was a fun flick. I also liked how they incorporated Iceman. It was good to see Kilmer on screen.

With the use of flashbacks throughout, I’m kinda surprised that they didn’t throw on in to make the connection to Penny Benjamin being mentioned in passing in the first movie.

Iwill also say, the scene where
[Show spoiler]Hamm walks away from Mav on the beach
seemed comp’ed. I don’t know if it was green screened or what but for all the shots they got in camera that one seemed off to me.
Absolutely, it really threw me off - not sure what happened there, but it looked like Cruise sitting on a beach chair in front of a plate shot basically. Very weird, but it was only like 3 seconds or so.

Just got back. I thought it was great. Very well done. Val Kilmer looked and sounded really good. I watched his documentary recently and was wondering how they were going to use him in this.
