What does that change? We'll still need to make a deal with the studio if we need access to the best available film elements.

I guess bootleggers can release discs transferred from worn-out collector prints?

In other words, there is a precedent for KL to bring something back into print, but it doesn't happen that often. Fat chance for more obscure titles.

Really hoping this weekend we'll find out about one of the 43 new to Blu-ray Paramount titles. Really excited to see what's in store there.

There have been several occasions the KLI has shot down some suggested title only to do an about-face. He practically laughed in the face of the guy who suggested Skullduggery, then a year or so later Kino releases it.

You can appeal to authority all you want but the KLI outright stated they got it wrong with Thunderbirds and there’s an entire (While Supplies Last) page on their website that is full of titles I’m betting they thought would have sold a lot better than they actually did. Table For Five has been on there for years at like $5 and they still can’t get rid of it.
Warner Brothers made a 4th DH film because Clint Eastwood wanted to make 1 more.

Yes, and I was right, Skullduggery is a poor performer. My boss changed his mind, he's a big Reynolds fan. I'm also a big Reynolds fan, but would've passed on Skullduggery and Impasse, another poor performer.

Yes, no one's right 100% of the time, we were wrong about the Thunderbirds films and some others, but even at that time, we felt it was a gamble and I don't think we want to gamble anymore. Table for Five, Back Roads, War Between and Harry Kellerman were acquired for low advances, all 4 had HD masters and someone at our company didn't want them to end up with a competitor, so we acquired them and even though most of us thought they were bad acquisitions, but we will not lose money on them. Two are close to selling out, the third a bit later and if needed, we'll end up purging the remaining copies of the last one.

Again, I'm sorry, but this is why can't listen to fans. You really don't know what you're talking about. A large majority of successful Blu-ray titles will never get released on UHD, if I to guess, I would say at least two-thirds. We've said we won't release The Long Riders, Thomas Crown Affair, Witness for the Prosecution... all of them were very successful BD releases. Just like the Blu-ray market was different from the DVD one, the UHD one is different from the BD one.

I think it's a good DVD title that won't sell on Blu-ray.

Kino Insider - Quick question about the sole 1985 new-to-Blu title in the MGM deal. Was this title previously released on pressed DVD, or as part of the MGM MOD line? Or perhaps both? Thanks.

I couldn't disagree more, and like I've said, it's not one song, the soundtrack was loaded with big name artists.

Relax. I said I may not double dip but I'm sure enough fans will. I'm not sure what it is you believe I have no knowledge of, unless you're criticizing a personal opinion

No he didn't. He was done with the series after The Enforcer.

While Never Say Never Again was in production, Warner Bros did a poll asking fans what other famous franchise character they would like to see on the big screen again and Dirty Harry was the overwhelming favourite.

Those results, combined with Eastwood's gratitude to Warner Bros for continuing to finance his more personal, less money-spinning projects in the late 70s-early 80s such as Bronco Billy and Honkytonk Man was what led to him agreeing to do another Dirty Harry film. Sudden Impact was going to be a starring vehicle for Sondra Locke that didn't involve the Dirty Harry character until that poll happened.

The first time someone asked for SKULLDUGGERY, it was after we had signed the first deal and I said I doubt we would be interested.

We ended up acquiring in the second deal, so when someone asked if we had any Burt Reynolds titles, I said no, hence the lie.

So, when did you talk to Eastwood about this? I don't see anyone, including the studio telling him what to do, as we all know he did a fifth one, did WB force him to do that one too?

I agree. This is where my knowledge is lacking: Do studios have film elements that they would be willing to license if it weren't for difficulties imposed by other rights-holders, such as for key music, owners of the underlying story, arguments over who has rights, etc.?

If this supposition is true, then my original question makes sense.

TIA.

I don't have to talk to Eastwood personally to read about it in literature related to his career, and I don't see how any of what I posted can be interpreted as anyone "telling him what to do".

He did the Dead Pool for similar reasons. Warner Bros financed his pet project Bird, so as a thank you he agreed to do another Dirty Harry movie. Bird was shot first but held back until the awards season in late 1988, the Dead Pool was shot in early '88 and released in the summer.

That's what I responded to, I don't pay attention to "double dip" comments.

Leviathan is a major acquisition.
