And just think. Paramount probably wanted to put this on streaming last year or so.

Well, I for one am very glad they decided to stick with a theatrical release. This was an exciting and also somewhat personal film, with characters that went beyond the stereotypes and actually conveyed emotions in spite of the harsh realities around them. I'm already looking forward to the Blu-Ray release, which I'm hoping will arrive around September or so.

Ukraine Maverick is like ... the smell of napalm in the morning, like the lord of the skies

I played with the numbers a short while ago, just for fun.

Maverick should hit the $1 billion mark worldwide by the end of this month (between the 27th @ the earliest and the 30th @ the latest).
Not bad @ all in roughly only one month; still during a pandemic, without China, without a Marvel or DC comic superhero, no Avatar, no Titanic, no Gone With the Wind, no Star Wars, no Batman, no Speedoman, no Superwoman, ... no Godfather, you all know the score.

Methinks nostalgia gets zero to do with finances, including box office ticket money numbers for Top Gun: Maverick; less than zero.

It truly is incredible how well this is performing at the Box Office. It's already blown Eternals out of the water by over double in under a month!

As of yesterday ...

Grosses
DOMESTIC (53.5%)
$491,222,824
INTERNATIONAL (46.5%)
$427,100,000
WORLDWIDE
$918,322,824

* If my calculations are ok 'Top Gun: Maverick' should hit the $1 billion mark (worldwide) on Monday the 27th. ...Unless I'm missing something. We'll see ...

By the way, last Wednesday and yesterday Top Gun 2 was the number 1 @ the box office (domestic). I bet it was also #1 in Japan and in South Korea, perhaps.
Nostalgia is running the show? No freaking way; it's just a good flick, period!

Very impressive. And yeah no, nostalgia might be a miniscule factor but by no means is the main factor at all. Plenty of movies that tried to cash-in on nostalgia and didn't make this sort of $. Try again.

Exactly. I really enjoyed Ghostbusters Afterlife, but that movie is easily more nostalgia driven than Maverick, and it made a fraction of its box office.

Just saw it. Liked it. Prefer the first half. Second half's mission was good. Overall was a fun movie. It was nice to see a movie without CGI..

The young Top Guns are not as memorable as the ones in the original. This movie was mainly about Maverick, duh. But yeah, the caracters were pretty weak.

I find this one to be kind of a remake of the first.. so many things that were similar..
[Show spoiler]the bar scene, the kids messing with the teacher without knowing it was the teacher, the beach sport, the romance sex, the "dick head" dude ice/hangman.

Also didn't like how he got saved by the bell twice, in similar fashion. And too much focus on the Goose stuff.

The first movie is definitely one of the most iconic 80s films, so I don't see what's wrong with a little nostalgic appeal bringing people back to cinemas
