The first Avatar film will be receiving a wide worldwide theatrical re-release on September 23rd, with remastered picture and sound FYI
This is to hype up the sequel (The Way of Water) coming in December so there could be a possibility of a new BD/UHD release coming this fall...

James Cameron announced today that Avatar will be reshown in 4K this year in theaters. As far as Cameron said, it will be shown on Sep. 23nd 2022. A new BD/ UHD will be available this fall. Right now, the UHD is for promotional use.

New 4K master would be welcome. Movie doesn't look very sharp.

The title certainly makes it sound like the "other" Avatar.

Should I get the Collector's Edition of Avatar or wait for the inevitable 4k release(and subsequent box set releases)? I'm think they will delete alot of the features on the Collector's Edition on the 4K release?

I’d much rather watch the “other” Avatar (the animated series, not the Shyamalan movie) than this. It may not be as famous, but I’d argue that it has a much more passionate fanbase. Cameron’s Avatar was like a big fad when it came out and then people forgot about it. I think the very belated sequel will make decent money (especially internationally), but not compared to the original.

The 4K is expected to come out before the sequel in December. Given that there's already 2 filmed sequels and 2 more planned (should the first 2 be successful), the complete box set is a good decade away - assuming movies are even released on disc at that point.

If you're worried about features, wait until the 4K release announcement to see what they do and do not include. I don't believe the collector's edition is oop yet so no harm waiting.

This is probably the most tired and broken record take on Avatar.

But there's a reason so many feel that way. I'm not saying zero people care about it, but so much about this article still rings true.

It's more to the point that it's literally been more than a decade and people are still posting the same tired complaints. It's like the movie personally came to your house; got it on with your mom; caused your parents to get divorced; and then became your new evil step-dad. Because I can't imagine any other way for any movie to cause someone to continue complaining about it for thirteen years.

Interesting that it looks like it will be released in scope. That’s a good thing, I think. It’s very clearly framed for scope and the open matte on the blu-ray does it no favors.

I don't have anything personal against the movie. I'm just astonished that so much money and effort has been going into multiple belated sequels that nobody asked for. I also find it fascinating how a movie once so (briefly) popular can just fall off the zeitgeist like this. If the sequels recapture the magic, power to them. Just don't be surprised if they don't, especially in the US (I can absolutely see overseas audiences returning to Pandora, especially China).

It's the highest grossing movie ever. Directed by a man who's previous movie was the highest grossing movie ever; until he broke his own record. What studio would say no to him?

I didn't see it in theaters originally, I'm not going to now lol If I want to watch it again, I'll just watch the BD. They pulled it so people go see it again, but can you not just rent or buy it digitally?
