For these are stories that can't be told in 2 to 2 1/2 hours
You can get Children of Dune on Blu ray in France. Not a great disc though, it's all squeezed onto one disc with some horrendous compression issues at times.

Angry Dune remake cancelled

Last I saw were articles from 03/23/11 that Paramount had canceled the remake Here's one of the quotes by Richard Rubinstein, who controls the rights to the book: "Paramount's option has expired and we couldn't reach an agreement. I'm going to look at my options, and whether I wind up taking the script we developed in turnaround, or start over, I'm not sure yet."

It's so disheartening to see these movies that I was so looking forward to seeing (H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" adaptation by Guillermo del Toro and a 3D CG "Yellow Submarine" movie by Robert Zemekis) being axed due to budget constraints.

I really think Sci Fi did as good a job as can be done with their mini series. The book is too dense for a 2 hr movie. Some stories r simply better read.

The problem with Dune is that there's just so much stuff about the alien worlds, cultures, and characters to memorize that a casual moviegoer would more than likely lose interest with the first 15 to 30 minutes especially with the lack of action required to maintain continued viewing.

I always felt it was something meant for hardcore lovers of science fiction given its elements and settings so it would be damn near impossible to make it a successful venture for mass audiences without compromising Herbert's vision.

Stuff like Star Wars and Avatar worked because the characters, locations, and lore would kept to a minimum so it was easier to keep track of and relate to.

To get a proper version of Dune in 1 sitting, it would have to get a Lord of The Rings Extended Edition treatment so the Dune mini-series (which I'm still waiting for to get the Blu-Ray treatment) is the best you're going to get plus its more faithful to the book.

Although to compare the two casts of the characters I cared about, I feel this way:

Quote:
Leto Atreides: William Hurt > Jürgen Prochnow

Paul Atreides: Kyle MacLachlan > Alec Newman

Chani: Barbora Kodetová > Sean Young

Vladimir Harkonnen: Ian McNeice > Kenneth McMillian

Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen: Matt Keeslar > Sting

Irulan Corrino: Virginia Madsen > Julie Cox

Shaddam Corrino: Giancarlo Giannini > José Ferrer

Liet-Kynes: Max von Sydow > Karel Dobrý

Gurney Halleck: Patrick Stewart > Patrick Moriarty

Duncan Idaho: James Watson > Richard Jordan
I can already hear the groans of some of my preferences, but its just my opinion.

So overall, screw another remake and let Sci-Fi make God Emperor of Dune already!

The main problem with the borderline incoherent David Lynch film is all of the pseudo-political bollocks that drowns the first half of the film. It really isn't required, and stripping the narrative down to the 'Saviour' concept of Muad'Dib and the Fremen battling the House Harkonnen who have lost thier Choam Company contract would be all that is required. Keep it straight-forward and the film could kick serious arse as a sci-fi epic for the masses!

The design of the Lynch film combined with the script for the mini-series would yield a fantastic film.

The Dune: Part Two thread didn't show up in my search. Someone graciously quoted my post there later.

I’m actually glad it’s this thread that got bumped as a reminder of what could have been.

Paramount optioned the rights in late 2007 and Peter Berg started developing it soon after. Charlize Theron and Robert Pattinson were in talks to play Jessica and Paul, with Joshua Zetumer writing the script and Berg planning to shoot the movie in Israel. After he passed on it, Pierre Morel became attached. One or two pieces of concept art from his time on the project actually made it online within the last year or so.

Ultimately it would’ve been terrible timing with Avatar coming out and becoming the biggest movie ever. It would’ve been like Lynch’s film coming out in the wake of the original Star Wars trilogy all over again. I’m guessing that’s why Paramount let their option expire in 2011. They already had Trek, M:I and Transformers anyway.

Herbert’s estate was smart with how they handled things after. Frank’s grandson Byron Merritt mentioned in 2013 or so that a “major production company” he couldn’t say the name of wanted to make the first three books into a film trilogy. I’m guessing maybe that was Legendary and the deal simply didn’t close until late 2016, just after Denis happened to mention Dune as his dream project in that Arrival interview and how he “probably wouldn’t be able to get the rights.” Life is funny.
