There is a site called the “Wayback Machine” that lets you see archives of websites that are no longer on service.

It is there that I found a website that helped to set the record straight on the Allen Smithee version of DUNE, why it happened, and what exact changes were made to the film.

You can find this information at the following URLs...

Part one can be found at: http://web.archive.org/web/199911271.../arrakis1.html

Part two can be found at: http://web.archive.org/web/199911151.../arrakis2.html

Please note that other than the changes listed, the website was originally prepared in 1999 during the era of VHS/Beta and LaserDisc, and therefore long before DVD, Blu Ray, and fan edits, so the info only reflects what was released at the time.

It is worth checking out if you really want to know what alterations were made to the extended cuts.

Thanks for sharing the info, but FYI, DVD was a few years into the format in 1999 and selling quite well at the time.

Very interesting, though the link gets the MCA exec's name slightly wrong - it's Harry Tatelman, not Tapelman, and here's an LA Times article from 1988 that specifies his role in the re-edit (and Lynch's lack of interest in being involved): https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-...381-story.html

Interesting that Lynch announced a longer cut for home video shortly after it hit theaters. So Universal actually recut the film for theatrical release without Lynch’s involvement? I was always under the impression that he was a good soldier and cooperated with the the change requests. He apparently was writing sequels at the time it was released.

The theatrical version was sanctioned by Lynch, not Universal. DeLaurentiis had Lynch recut the film to 137 min., and that is the only version that was authorized by Lynch.

Hi there, Grand Duke. Did you make your own edit of Dune in 1080p yet? Just asking as you mentioned it about 2 years ago and all the other fan edits I've seen are in 480p.

Thanks so much!

No, four children have prevented that. Now, with the new UHD I make take the time to insert the 1080p footage from the deleted scenes DE TV cut and incorporate it with the UHD. There are also other things I'd have to tinker with though such as keeping the theatrical cut of the Geidi Prime scene, which is butchered to death on the TV cut.

My friend, only if your sleeping with her is what made her his ex, only then are you a true Harkonnnen

Dear Grand Duke,

I truly hope your HD fan edit will materialize. One thing is for sure, we can never have too many fan edits. I'm sure a lot of fans would love to see it in HD...!

I watched the 3hr 'Spicedriver' cut in 4K on YouTube. It holds up very even today.

Don't know how they got away with 3hr Hollywood fan cut on YouTube, but it's there.

I have the TV cut on DVD and TC on BD, but the 4K Spicedriver cut is a great watch.

I have not read the full thread, so I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this before. But the picture in this blu-ray is masked. There are picture details missing both on the sides and bottom, and a little bit at the top too.

Furthermore I find the user menues annoying with too many popup functions and preview movie ads that disturb the movie experience.

Is there no better edition available?

Exactly what release are you referring to? I don't follow.

It is this https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dune-Blu-ray/9665/ the 2010 blu-ray. Or it may be the 2016 https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dune-Blu-ray/151366/, not sure, the box looks the same, and I believe the blu-ray disc is the same.

David Lynch: Yeah, I wanted to walk away. I always say, and it’s true, that with Dune, I sold out before I finished. It’s not like there’s a bunch of gold in the vaults waiting to be cut and put back together. It’s like, early on I knew what Dino wanted and what I could get away with and what I couldn’t. And so I started selling out, and it’s a sad, sad, pathetic, ridiculous story. But I would like to see what is there. I can’t remember, that’s the weird thing [laughs]. I can’t remember. And so it might be interesting—there could be something there. But I don’t think it’s a silk purse. I know it’s a sow’s ear.

He tried, desperately even, to get an extended version on VHS in the late 80s only to see the television version created. But it’s not like he’s all the busy these days. Seems he’s mostly revisiting his previous films anyway, so why not Dune?

I'm probably seeing things but the font used in the credits for Highlander 2: The Quickening (1991) looks almost identical to the credits in DUNE (1984). Virginia Madsen is in both so I screen-grabbed her credit:

Highlander II's font looks closer to the John Carpenter one.

From “The Thing” right? Yes, I think you may be correct. I didn’t realize that until you mentioned it.

Off of YouTube via my iPhone so it may be slightly squashed here:
