So much for that B2G1 some folks thought might happen right after the last sale.

Heads up for Kino Lorber fans. Despite not having any of the March releases available at Target (Love Letters, Little Miss Marker, If I Had a Million, Counsellor at Law, The Crusades, etc), the April releases just showed up! (The Big Easy, Moment to Moment, Rio, High Wide and Handsome, The Mississippi Gambler, etc). Also, Film Noir The Dark Side of Cinema XII appears to be mismarked as XI, but it is there.

We rarely buy Kino titles anywhere but Kino anymore. We always end up waiting until we have a large enough order for free shipping, or end up buying a title or three we didn't plan on to reach the free ship threshold, but it's worth it. Nobody can discount as steeply as the actual producer selling direct, which is how it should be, so you know they're giving you an honest deal, unlike Shout which rarely offers sales of their own cheaper than what you can buy their stuff for from middleman, upon middleman. They obviously depend on buyers who don't shop around enough to know better. Buying Universal/Warner titles was about the same via gruv, last year. This year, it's like they're under new management or something. I still miss Foxconnect and WBShop (when they still sold WAC) though.

I've often bought Kinos on Target's 3 for 2 sales. But we'll see if they have them anymore. I buy from Kino's sales too, but don't always want to wait for preferred titles, sales items not always in the right combo for reaching the free shipping level, etc. To each their own, but I know there are others here who have also purchased Kinos from Target's sales. I was worried they were dropping them from their shrinking inventory (like Warner Archives), glad they aren't. I like choices!!

Any reason why Target is not selling Puss in Boots the last wish 4k edition in stores? Online only and its $40. Getting harder and harder to find physical 4k’s in stores especially since my Best buy closed. Seems walmart and target are pushing blurays and dvds.

My particular Target is pretty bad but it's a fairly new store.

If I had to guess - I think they want to move some of the Target exclusive blu ray copies.

Online is the way to go for movies on disc, sadly. That and the dollar store.

My Best Buy only had 2 copies of the UHD. I think some of these stores bought into the idea that people don't buy discs anymore. Well, if you aren't selling them then people won't be buying them.

Just my opinion but 4K is probably considered a niche format to many retailers and are not selling to justify its floor space, not the flatscreens just the discs.

aaaaaand based on what I read in the 4K thread there seems to be more issues with the discs than bluray and dvd. One little scratch and sometimes the disc will freeze.

I have bought some DVDs that did not look great, fingerprints surface marks that played beautifully. Even blurays these days very little issues.

Two discs in Harry Potter box, Heat, American Gangster freezes. And even though I have cheap 4K players the dudes in the 4K thread with high end machines also have complaints.

I rarely see any complaints anymore in the bluray movies threads.

and as I just said DVDs seem to be Rock Solid!

I've heard this, too, about 4k discs being more sensitive to damage. If this is true, that is a bummer since blurays are built to be more scratch resistant.

It also wouldn't bode well for PS5 games since those are using 4k discs. Folks here aren't likely to fall in a group that mistreats their discs, but we know most folks do.

I thought 4K discs were still BDs with the same anti-scratch coating except they have denser data. The BD-100s are triple layer and BD-66s are double layer. When the data is smaller, the same size scratch, even a light hairline one, could be enough to overcome the error correction on a double or triple layer 4K but not a single or double layer BD.

I also believe there is some glue or UV sealing (like dental sealants) involved when those different layers are applied. Any time glue is involved that can degrade the disc over time especially if air can leak in. I believe it was the glue chemical that caused some CDs, DVDs or LDs to degrade or "bronze" over time. It's worrisome these expensive "archival" pressed discs we're buying might someday degrade en masse with the 4Ks being the most sensitive due to the data density. So far I've only encountered a few such problems.

"Lorraine, I am your density. I mean your destiny."

Have one order of three titles that all come out today, and they're all being shipped separately from different locations.

Now delayed until March 14th for me, I had to approve the delay again.

Logic would dictate that since a 4K disc has twice the amount of bits than a BD, then it should have even a STRONGER layer of coating to prevent scratches from affecting the surface. A tiny scratch on a BD won't do a thing. That same scratch on a 4K can (and probably will) affect playback.

How the 4K physical standard got approved without the scratch coating application is beyond me. It is the #1 reason why I do not think a large 4K collection is wise, as I am convinced it will not stand the test of time.

I have left my BDs out and about. Not a good habit, to be sure, but it has never affected playback. never. If treated 4K discs the same way, then it would not end up well.

After upgrading to 4K, I planned on only getting 4K discs going forward. I am no longer doing that and limiting my 4K purchases to a select few that are both my favorite films and whose transfers are a major improvement over BD. I now prefer a hybrid release (4K and BD) as I am now seeing the BD as a backup when the 4k fails.

I have already had playback problems on some 4Ks. Yup, small scratches.

I know many in this community are really excited about getting their films on 4K. To me, it was a missed opportunity by the designers of the format and I think many of us will be unpleasantly surprised in years to come that our 4Ks no longer play from normal usage of getting the discs out of the case and handling.

And heaven help us if 4k box sets use cardboard sleeves!

As always, just my opinion based on my personal experience. YMMV.

I was a 4k buying snob the past few years, ignoring the blu ray 2k titles.

Nowadays, the pendulum has swung the other way, as people were dumping their blu ray 2k titles for the luscious allure of 4k titles, I've leaned into picking up more and more used blu ray 2k titles for cheap due to their value proposition over 4k discs, and blu ray 2k discs do seem more durable and less fragile due to their protective layer of coating (I don't fear cleaning them off with water, and wiping them off with the palm of my hand, and visible minor scratches play through without issue for me so far. I couldn't do that with older DVDs, which lack that protective coat and scratch far too easily).

For the new "common" 4k titles coming out, I'm sitting on the sidelines, electing to purchase themwhen they go on sale at heavily discount prices if I'm interested in those new 4k titles later.

same thing is happening right now CD vs Vinyl.

a vinyl reissue costs $30 the same CD used costs $6 some of them cost that new on Amazon.

Let's hope Millcreek doesn't jump on the 4k bandwagon.

I also don't mind getting bluray over 4k for most titles unless there's a steelbook out of a 4k...then I'll usually prefer that. I know that's an acquired taste. Thankfully most also have a bluray disc included. Sometimes I'll even just watch the bluray disc and leave the 4k disc in its tray(depending on ease of access). It's not as big of a jump as dvd to bluray was. Atleast not to me.

Mostly through some FB groups where folks lists their movies (DVD/BD/4ks/Codes) for sale. Try to keep it around $2/BD, and media mail costs, so I end up trying to buy 10+ titles to offset the shipping costs. One guy was offering BDs for $1.50 each, and I've bought a bunch from him.

Some times the BD cases are trashed, so I'll snag some cheap $0.75-$1.25 BD titles from Big Lots and Dollar Tree and swap out the cases (with some of those cheap titles coming with digital codes, it makes it more palatable at times. I have a growing stack of so-so BD titles in broken cases, may end up just dropping those off at Goodwill one day). And I wipe down the other cases that aren't damaged, and also try to wipe off any smudges on the BD's themselves, thank goodness for that durable protective coating on BDs, eases my mind on buying used BDs.

There's also FB marketplace, though I haven't found any listings which have piqued my interest enough for an in-person meet to procure BDs.

There's a used media store near me, plus a few more in my city, but the average costs is $4/BD (and up, depending on title, like I still have my eye on "To Live and Die in L.A." BD that is on the shelves for $19), and when I hit sales like "buy 5 get 5" at 2nd and Charles.

There's also Ebay for more desirable titles (and cheaper grouped titles where the shipping costs can be minimized), and 4k's and steelbooks here and there. There's also Mercari, but seems like the costs are a little higher on that site.
