Also, don't forget that at one time Pixar was the computer graphics division of Industrial Light & Magic, and Young Sherlock Holmes (the stained-glass knight) was ILM.

Except that at the time Tom Hanks wasn't quite yet TOM HANKS and Tim Allen was still the guy from Home Improvement (remember the voices are recorded a LONG time before the finished product hits the screen).

Spacey was a more of an indie/supporting person too, he wasn't a megastar in 1996/97 when the voices were recorded for Bug's Life.

Meanwhile DreamWorks trumpets their celebrities with top billing and lets the voice dominate the characters personalities.

Perhaps, however, its Pixar that has improved it year after year and brought it to where it is now. My point is more that ANY studio is capable of making a movie look as good as Pixar does (the tools are available)....but only Pixar pulls it off. So far anyway.

Isn't Tim Allen still the guy from Home Improvement? He hasn't done a lot since that show ended. I agree though that Pixar doesn't go looking for the biggest stars possible. Look at Up. Absolutely no huge names, especially that kids would recognize.

I must disagree. Tom Hanks was HUGE before Toy Story. He already had these under his belt...

Pixar still has the edge, Dreamworks is like the gobots to transformers, sure they had some cool ones, but it still wasn't transformers (toys).

Really the only computer animated dreamworks movies I like are Ice Age, Shrek 1 & 2. I did like Prince of Egypt by them, but that's about it.

Pixar has my favorites being toy story 1 and 2. Hard to compete with those. However I do welcome some competition in the future by Dreamworks.

As for the talent, yeah Tom Hanks was already huge by then. And being that most of us saw Usual Suspects, Kevin Spacey was recognizable and well respected.

You cant argue about Hanks. You just cant. He was a HUGE household name. Bossom Buddies, Sleepless and Big alone did that. He may have been in some movies that didnt make big $, but he (and his VOICE) were very recognizable.

My Point is that Pixar uses clebrity voices to help sell the movie. Voices people fondly recognize, and often a listers and TV friendly voices. Look at the Incredibles and Cars. They use voices of comfort and familiarity to pull an audience. They do. Spacey was hot at the time. John Goodman was hot at the time. Craig T Nelson was hot at the time. Foley was hot at the time. Thats my point. Pixar didnt stray away from selecting talent that was "in" at the time. Especially Cars. Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Paul Newman, George Carlin, Michael Keaton.

Also Pixar picks characters that kids love to buy tons of things of. Cars, Fish, Cookbooks, etc. DreamWorks toys tend to be a bunch of "gassy" animals. Fart jokes last only so long...even for kids.

I remember how ugly the Shrek toys were...not a lot sold of them today...Cars is still ALL over the place...Nemo too!

most people believe great box offices success means a great movie.pixar establish that reign with toystory1and2 ,and bugstory and finding nemo was good but not great movies just because they put out quality video, cars included was notthat spectacular, Dreamworks madgascar1 and 2,kungfu panda with the recent monster versus alien definitely raised the bar compare to antz and sharktale a significant leaps and bounds over those movies.Pixar had toystory1and2 and the incredibles alltime favorite,compare to walle and up I think they got tired in that department especially cars which made more money at the box offices but didnot exceed madagascar2 and kungfu panda as being a better movie.people get caught up with the name Pixar because of their past achievement.Thx is a name people see on most pixar movie and thx guys still donot know their true purpose as far as the audio codec department as well as videothey are confused because Pixar is part of their equation.Dreamwork definitely got my props,Pixar putting movie out because they have the audience seeing and hearing thx.thx and pixar is therefore the same.

someone in the threads mention superman return uses renderman product, did you checkout the review on the video department very crappy review on both edition of this movie.Just because you uses the product doesnot guaranteed the movie will look great on bluray.So Dreamwork is also own by disney as well as pixar,but disney bluray gotten better because pixar top honcho,who is the boyscout in Up movie as well as walle captain of the ship(close similairity) is helping them using their product,Dreamwork relies on their collective effort to utilized effectively to make a greatproduct capeech

Sorry i don't have a brother work for dreamworks,Darkhune i am not trying for you to agree with me but I explain myself about dreamworks accomplishment versus Pixar,you will stick with Pixar because your brother work there.Lately Pixar have very good short including Presto,but the feature movie is not spectacular Walle now Up ,versus Kungfu Panda and Madasgascar2 not close compared even though Pixar made more at the boxoffice . Because of Pixar past representation,not their recent addition have come to a grind.Example would be Mercedes versus Acura,Mercedes represent the best and have low resale because of their history(pixar)now,while Acura cars got even better with time and have a higher resale return value(dreamwork).
