Hi,
Just come across this great thread after reading about the native 4K confusion in UHD discs for the first time this evening. A couple of questions that hopefully someone can advise on: 1) Regarding updates to this thread, are just films added that are suggested, or is there any ordered system of going through release date pages such as https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/releasedates.php?4k=1 or https://ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html 2) This is going to keep growing forever isn't it. Wouldn't a link to a spreadsheet be easier to manage? 3) If Blu-ray.com lists UHD releases as 'Native 4K' and 'Upscaled 4K', am i corrent in thinking that this actually means: Native 4K: Scanned in 4K (likely from film), or 4K native digital, but both likely downscaled to 2K for working with the print and then upscaled back to 4K. Upscaled 4K: 2K Scan or 2K digital release, likely worked on in 2K and then upscaled to 4K. 4) Is there a list of films anywhere that were filmed on cameras with 4K or above, and where the filmakers used a 4K digital intermediate? From this avforums page: https://www.avforums.com/articles/a-...blu-ray.12353/ i was only able to find 4 films: Chappie, The Expendables III, The Revenant, The Smurfs 2. I guess there is no way of us knowing if there are any True 4K releases as even these have likely been downscaled for processing? Thanks for any insight. |

3) Don't trust the BD.com listings. Usually they are correct, but sometimes they are not. 4) Everything in my list was given a 4K or higher scan. Last edited by HD Goofnut; 06-29-2023 at 03:15 PM. |

RE: Question 3: Native 4K: Movies with a full 4K workflow (or hypothetically higher) output to a 4K DI (and 4K DCP theatrical) will be on his list.
(NOTE: A couple of 65 mm films were scanned at 8K and output to 8K DI for Japan NHK for showcase on 8K displays during the summer Olympic year. They are not available for streaming or other distribution outside of Japan to my knowledge.) 8K display tech has kind of ground to a slow walk due to lack of adoption by the general public. The scenario you described shot 4K with a 2K workflow even if upscaled back isn’t a native 4K DI. Last edited by gkolb; 06-17-2023 at 03:58 AM. |

I definitely wouldn't call a film scanned in or shot in 4k (or higher) but using a downrezzed workflow a native 4k release. Doing a downrez/uprez isn't lossless either. If this site is in fact calling a release with a 2k workflow "native 4k" we should definitely try to get that changed. Any specific examples of such?

Listed on this site as native 4K but not on the list:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (should this be added to the list or is this an upscale?) Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom (is on the list as native. This site has it as native for US/Canada but upscale for EU. AVforums says it's upscale) Last edited by asianhawk; 07-01-2023 at 12:19 AM. |

I'll need confirmation on these here. I'm adding the ones from the above post that I know were 4K scans.
