Digital Audio Video Review by Chris Burton

As picture quality goes, this blu-ray disc is a slight improvement over the hd-dvd release. It is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. The colors are strong and smooth, suffering from no noise problems. Also, there was minimal grain, a bit less than on the hd-dvd. There was a great sense of three dimensionality to the image as well. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, not Digital Plus surprisingly enough. Thus, the action sequences are not quite as they were on the other transfer. However, the action still rocks on all the surrounds. The bass is strong on all the surrounds as well.

If both soundtracks are done at 640kbps, how can one sound better than the other? Does DD+ use better compression or something? Or does he just like seeing the "+" so much that he has fooled himself into thinking DD+ has better sound?

my understanding is that the + soundtracks take up more space because they support up to 10 channels or something like that. given the extra space, some companies are using higher bitrates and not the new codecs for better sound. just what i have heard for what it is worth.

given that, it's not better. just fooling himself

Warner titles are using the 640kbps, i'd chance to say Paramount isn't which is why they are including DTS tracks as well, IE Four Brothers. Not sure if Tomb Raider has DTS too.

I wonder if Paramount are doing really good MPEG2 for BD...?

Do we know the codec used yet?

honestly, does it matter? i have stated from the beggining that i don't two shakes of a rat's a@@ as long as the picture is spectacular. from what we're hearing, it is. so i don't care (personally).

BTW... angelina in hi def. lord all mighty it may be time to buy

It does matter a little. Not to the quality of the movies per se but it matters with respect to the choices made by the studios.

If Paramount can make MPEG2 discs which match or better the VC-1 discs of the same title, it shows that there are no inherent issues in the authoring methods of Bluray since day one, and therefore indicates that it was the encoding methods and masters at fault with the Columbia crap titles, not anything to do with the format, including codec.

It is also a slap in the face for Amir and is team, since Paramount can match the quality of all of there hard work with an outdated crappy codec like MPEG2

And personally I enjoy any slap in the face headed in their direction, due to the misleading and deceptive comments made by said poster.

He deserves everything he gets and a slap is not good enough, This clown has brain washed people so bad they dream of vc-1 now, It has been proven time and time again mpeg2 can do just as good. Even this holy of all codes has flaws that the messiah said wouldnt be there yet the sheep still follow this leader. I really dispise this person and i hope like talkstght hinted he gets fired for his behavior, i hate to be this way but whta he has done is unethical and unprofessinal and if i was mr gates his @ss would be out in the cold in a heartbeat,

Humm. lets think about this one Bill Gate's, Windows which is a system that crashes more then the Toshibia HD-A1 pushes VC-1. Apple, osX which 75% of all movie Studio's use for editing movies pushes mpeg2 or mpeg4 which do you think is going to be better in the end? Here is anthor one I wonder how long before Universal takes on blue ray? They use apple software in most of there studios. Hard to back something when the major Movie editing companies backs blue ray. What's next WMA codecs being the great new hope.
Anyways there any nice shots of angelina. I want to get this movie but my local BB and CC don't have it

. I agree Anagelina in high def. I won't leave the couch for a couple days. LOL
