Just checked my DVD copy and it's 1.33:1. Criterion Forum backs this up:

Another year of releases complete. As always, it's fascinating to see the output in a given year, as well as the variety of covers.

This is the first-ever physical release for del Toro's Pinocchio. Maybe you're thinking of a different version?

Get the Garrone version and give del Toro a miss.

Avoided Criterion's DVD and Network's blu of The Red Balloon because they both made a hash of color. Has this new blu-ray solved it I wonder. Still remember when we were shown this film at school in the 70s, noisy old projector and all.

I'm in for GDT's Pinocchio 4K and The Red Balloon. Still hoping for a Wall•E-level surprise announcement though.

Ohhh, I mislabeled one of the entries in my database. I bought the Italian film directed by Matteo Garrone.

Lucky me. I get to spend more Criterion money after all!

Blast of Silence was a film I had hoped Criterion would do a Blu-ray upgrade of. Only title among the December line-up that I'm interested in (which doesn't bother me in the slightest as (based on the post I made in this thread recently) I have plenty of Criterion titles (US and UK) that I have on my want list that I haven't got yet.

Thanks MifuneFan for posting about the December titles.

You even get a short comic by cover artist Sean Phillips.

Great that they are releasing Toro’s Pinocchio on 4k. But if Criterion is releasing a 4k of that though, then where the heck is Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs on 4k?

anyone know if the Pinocchio release will be digipack for all versions (4k/bluray/dvd), or just for the 4k/bluray 2pack?

Curious about that as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the single disc Blu-ray could be a regular Criterion case.

yeah I believe the last couple of uhd digipack releases it was just the uhd/bluray the digipack (Lost Highway for example), the other release was just standard case.

A nice set of covers with all these new announcements. I never expect that so it’s a nice surprise.

From kindergarten through 6th grade at my grade school we saw THE RED BALLOON once a year every year on 16mm and I never got sick of it. I looked forward to it every year and I still love it. Now Criterion is honorably preserving my memory with what will undoubtedly be the definitive edition to guide me through my second childhood.

Now that we know their entire line up for 2023, I'm still pretty ho hum about it, mainly due to the lack of 0 new to HD Japanese titles and a ton of upgrades to 4K that already had either really good Blu-rays or 4K already somewhere in the world.

Instead of going on a rant, I'm just going to hope for the best for 2024 and getting some of my most wanted held hostage Criterion titles. I'm thinking we'll at least get Pat Garrett or The Roaring 20's.

I understand you’re very micro focused on one small niche so I appreciate your opinion. HOWEVER, I feel this year from Criterion has been absolutely un-f*****g-real. No even counting 4K upgrades the following come to mind:

- After Hours 4K
- Mean Streets 4K
- Inland Empire
- Moonage Daydream 4K
- The Trial 4K
- The Others 4K
- Baron Munchausen 4K
- One False Move 4K
- Pasolini box set
- Thelma and Louise 4K
- The Europe Trilogy
- Todd Browning set
- The Ranown Westerns 4K

Not to mention all of the incredible upgrades we got this year. What an incredible year!!
