It looks like The Marvels was used as off-peak filler because I don't see any performances for today. But Sunday has two performances then Monday and Tuesday have a single performance on each day. Looks like Tuesday is the last day.

He blames Bob Chapek for everything that he caused. Every single failed movie was green-lit by Iger and it was Iger's decision to feed the Disney+ beast with more MCU content. Anyone who has recently read the Hollywood and financial trades knows that while Chapek was "nominally" CEO, in reality Iger was still in charge. So this PR blitz he's on is only fooling the Disney die-hards. Speaking of not very nice people, Elon gained a lot of new friends by calling out Iger to his face.

Bottom line, YouTubers were begging Disney to release the Marvels because they knew it would be YouTube Christmas. But as bad as we all thought it would be, no one thought it would be this bad. It is literally the worst performing MCU movie in every meaningful metric you can think of.

P.S. If Deadpool performs as well as we all think it will, then watch Iger take credit even though it was greenlit by Chapek.

other than the incels out to bash the film a year before it came out, I think the issue was it was a film that had no meaningful plot that was known, and no stakes. Captain Marvel hadn't been in anything since End Game, and Monica was only in a show for a second. And Ms. Marvel the show, sucked, IMO. It always seems like a one-off and they never had anything in the one trailer they kept showing for a year that made it seem like it linked to any plot people cared about. Ant Man 3 sucked, but at least it had entirely established existing characters. But it sucked because again, it was a bottle episode. Plus the CGI.

GOTG3 was amazing but it's an outlier since it is kinda its own thing that people already love.

I liked The Marvels as a fun diversion with very good 3D. I probably won't rush to watch it again though.

Ignoring the who's at fault argument, he's not wrong about the problem of quantity over quality. They've pushed so much MCU content in the last few years that people are just worn out from it and the demand that Disney has placed on everyone to get this stuff out shows at every level of the movie/show making process.

I was super excited for Captain Marvel and enjoyed it a lot, and still do. I barely cared that The Marvels was coming out though. I've been lenient on the MCU's flaws post-Endgame as they still do have some great content, but it's all basically become a bland Saturday morning cartoon show with a rotating cast of super heroes battling the generic villain of the week.

And why pay to go see that when you can simply wait a few months and watch it on D+

to be fair, we are the minority in that regard, with many/most of us having great home theater setups. The average consumer goes to the theater to see something on the big screen, for the spectacle. I have a 135" movie screen in my house, but most people don't. So they go to the theater for big action films.

I'm one of the few people who actually liked the way Larson played the main character. I really liked Captain Marvel when it first came out and in isolation I would still feel the same way. But it was basically the start of what the MCU would become so I don't feel the same way any more.

Disney tried to play the game but even they have publicly given up on this movie. It had too many things going against it. A main character who was supposed to be the future of the MCU, but who a lot of people disliked both on and off screen. Supporting characters most people hadn't heard of or care about, and a series of poor to mediocre movies preceding it that killed off any remaining anticipation. All this before we even talk about the movie itself with easily the worst villain in the MCU. Put all that together and you end up with the worst MCU opening, worst second week dropping, tied lowest scoring movie in the MCU.

I think that used to be true, but isn't anymore. COVID changed our viewing habits and audiences haven't shown up in droves to the theaters like they used to. While the big spectacle movies can still achieve those numbers; they are rare and the only ones able to do so. It's becoming increasingly common for movies to underperform at the box office compared to expectations pre-release - especially for Disney produced content.

Marvel just needs to slow it down, spend more time on the fx and crafting stories and characters people want to see, and most importantly, for cinematic success, make sure each movie feels like a real event that MUST be seen on the big screen. Ie Avatar the Way of Water.

I think Oppenheimer and Barbie proved this wrong. People will come out to films they care about, in droves.
