Generally true although it should be noted that while the 35mm doesn't have the DNR smoothing the home stuff sometimes has, even on the 35mm prints the grain is often quite on the light side compared to plenty of other films. It's not really a title where the grain consistently leaps out at you. Of course that makes it all the more strange why they did any DNR at all.

This, plus the DTS:X tracks on all the JP films are pretty sh*t compared to past releases

Why, what's wrong with it?

Just watched JP2 (Lost World) this afternoon. Pretty soft transfer with what looks like a light haze in most scenes. There are a few fleeting glimpses of excellence but for the most part it's light on detail. Colors are also slightly muted and nothing to get excited about. HDR was strong though...they weren't shy with the nits. Overall, the image was still very enjoyable.

DTS:X wise I watched this on a 9.3.6 setup (of course the format is no more than 7.1.4) in a dedicated theater room @ 90 dBA peak (pic on the left). Lots of environmentals and ambiance from the overheads and surrounds. Readily noticeable height effects were a bit sparse and in play less than I would have thought but when they were in the mix they were well executed. No infrasonic bass to note but the 30Hz and up action was legit. Even got some good "chest thump" hits in a couple instances...not common in a movie of this era. I will say some of that might be my sub array's optimization (nearfield placement, manual time alignment, and careful equalization for relatively flat response from 8-160 Hz - No BEQ though - can't stand how bloated that sounds). Also had a bit of notable mid-bass in the heights with the T-Rex growls and roars. Pretty rare as those channels are often stripped of bass. Overall, I would say the audio track is a blast and pushed an otherwise poor entry in the series up a notch.

And oh BTW...JP1's DTS:X track is one of the best around. Not sure why anyone would have issue with it. A bit bombastic on occasion when cranked...sure...but it matches the movie and works great to jump scare the audience.

This disc has a kind of "Mill Creek" look to it.

Are the normal Blu-Ray releases from 2018 based on the new 4k master or they just the old blu-ray releases?

I think all of the 1080p Blu-ray editions contain the older HD master made initially for the DVD release.

Well dang, that’s twice in a row that I missed out! I bought the set months ago from Amazon (third party) and it was labelled as new, but it didn’t come with the advertised digital code.

After watching and really loathing the latest Jurassic World I popped the original in tonight. I remembered liking it okay the second time, after watching it first in the theater and thinking it was too silly. Well, maybe how crazy CGI fueled blockbusters have gotten has changed my perspective but I found myself really enjoying JW1 tonight. Just a really fun time, and honestly the raptor training stuff seems a lot less silly in retrospect for whatever reason (I still hate the bro nod at the end though).

Honestly a big reason it works is it focuses on characters. Even smaller parts like the computer workers and owner and such get tons of personality and character moments, while the newest movie is a clusterf**k of poorly developed plots and characters you barely remember. Anyway... JW1 is fun, and JW3 really is awful compared. I don't know if I'll watch 2 tomorrow, probably not. I kinda feel like watching Lost World.

P.S. Disc looks amazing in lots of ways but the grain really does look funky sometimes. Obviously managed as part of the DI and not a disc issue though. Overall still a great 8 or so out of 10 looker though. Them colors pop baby (sorry Geoffy).

P.P.S. That girl's death is rad.

The first two films in these trilogies are the same basic story. It's the 3rd installments that differ. JP3 barely fits the cinematic feel of the first two and by today's standards is a straight-to-home/streaming release. It's ultimately a giant ad for a cellphone company.
All that being said... I'm still waiting for official remake of the first film; "Billy and the Cloneasaurus".

Not saying JP3 is great, but I remember it being a dumb fun b-movie. Like The Land That Time Forgot in the 2000s. Jurassic World 3 was more offensively bad and not fun at all. I can't even remember one scene I liked, like literally not one. Even when the whole cast is running from super dino #57 it felt poorly edited with no stakes or tension. I really hated it.

Are we telepathically connected? I just bought it and watched it on Saturday. I also didn't like it back in the day but had a blast watching it now. And the UHD is FABULOUS, although it could breathe more on the BD100.

I enjoyed JW3 more than JW2 which was basically escape lava flow, hard cut to dino auction in James Bond villain hideout.

My theater showed the first film as part of Flashback Cinema today. I wasn't 100% sure what to expect, since I know Fathom Events typically look like bad HDTV broadcasts, but I'm happy to report it was a proper DCP based on what I assume to be the 4K master. I think it looked a lot better as it went along - the colors looked warmer and richer once they got to the island, but without going as far as the 3D version's color grading. You can definitely tell that the opticals are filtered, though, even the location titles early on (which I'd have thought would've been digitally redone). But everything taken from the negative looked great; you can even see the fishing line(?) they used to make the water ripple in that famous shot of the cups before the T-Rex attack.

Wow! And I have vowed not to ever go to a Fathom even ever again. Funny thing is I have on my calendar tomorrow is RAD day. I'm not going to waste my money.
