Letterboxd is great if you take the time to block the meme reviewers and follow people whose writing connects with you.

That's what I try to do, but it's like living in a house made of cheese trying to keep the mice out. I have a decent collection of reviewers I follow but there are just so many meme reviews clogging up the top spots for any movie of significance. I wish they could do something about that.

Needless to say, count me in the group who believes there should be room for discussion about the actual films here.

Most of my favorite releases of 2023 were done by Arrow (Bruce Lee, Moodysson, Psycho Collection, Empire box, Blood and Black Lace UHD for example). So I really can't see where they fell off. It was sad to see Academy go, but they are now Radiance. And they still have enough left for me to discover, like, I still need to get that Coffin Joe boxset as a blind buy. It's sad to see so many discs need replacements, but besides that, I'm very happy with Arrow and always excited when they announce new stuff. If a month is not weird enough, there's so many other labels now that fulfill this passion. I feel stuffed by releases and announcements, and that is a good thing.

I’m relatively new here and when I excitedly click on threads I find about films I want to know more about or debate with other enthusiasts. More often than not it’s people chatting about where their order is “has yours been dispatched” etc or technical aspects that read like coding.

I think the Physical media world is also not really looking after its own health. It’s becoming a niche hobby and there’s only so many people that will buy films and it’s not a cheap hobby (and I’m not including then having the physical space for it) with limited editions, often they are (understandabley pricier) which like you say either puts us off because we have lots of other films we need to buy or you just can’t justify it or feel exploited

Was talking about music and the vinyl revival the other day. I did dip my toe in but they are so pricey even for old releases like Nick Drake where all the studio fees and production were covered for before I was born. I don’t see how many kids, teenagers etc can get into buying stuff when Taylor Swift is over £40. No way to grow your customers. Hopefully, labels will be a bit more savvy and kinder to their base.
the kind of people who have a dedicated interest in films, enough to put in the time and effort it takes to put together the kind of size and personality represented amongst many here are few and far between, always have been.

the characteristics they chase after still were always there in some way. it's now a niche of a niche, and lots of the people in it that are relative newcomers are operating as though label loyalty buys knowledge and taste. far too many come across as though they easily stumbled into this forum, and opted for the labels that are pinned threads as places of most value.

for me, if i have any, it was hard earned and long-wished-for over pre and early internet days. then, with DVD, i found looking for myself for things which caught my eye from what i saw being sold and up for preorder was something of a floodgate moment. i still work that way. i don't like labels beyond them sometimes generally hitting nearer my taste than others.

i'm quite happy to not buy 99% of what i see being released. i'm unhappy that 99% of that is also not coming across as potentially of interest enough to warrant glancing past them to things which i've grown a sense of a possible easier connection to that comes from things i've seen in the past - stepping stones from one film to the next, if you like.

even the 1% i do sense is of interest is hard work, and often not properly supported by trailers and clear publicity. mailing lists fail, websites are poor, i don't use twitter any more, don't follow everything in every possible way to try and cover all bases. it's just not done to be easy for anyone but those at risk of looking like they're dysfunctionally dedicated.

labels do seem to have gone past accepting the fate of physical media as negative, and walked themselves intentionally into a reduced market. at least they can convince themselves, and the necessary select few buyers, that they're small and dedicated. they're the niche that can't be anything but a niche, rather than the one haven within a sea of mass produced stuff as was the height of DVD twenty years ago.

there's far less concern for people getting the chance to see this stuff than for a small number to be able to boast about how tough it is to find - counter to the claims of preserving or saving films.

I'm thankful for all the admin chat in the forums. There's so many other options for dedicated film reviews, but not much else where so many different releases are collected, shared and compared. I discovered so many movies on here, and all I need is a brief idea of the movie and my gut feeling to go for it or not. I don't read reviews before I watch a movie. Afterwards I enjoy to compare my experience, but for this I use books, podcasts, YouTube or Letterboxd. This forum is so helpful in so many ways. So many knowledgeable users, the database with the search function and all the collected informations. It's like the best possible physical media tool you can have.

Posted on the Criterion thread but also relevant here (somewhat) - turns out Icon have UK rights to Point Break, as well as other Largo titles apparently as they just announced Malcolm X 4K as well. I imagine they might release some other Largo titles on Blu-ray (Unlawful Entry, The Getaway, White Squall, Mulholland Falls, City of Industry, Affliction), which would be good. I'd especially want Unlawful Entry and Affliction...

So yeah, turns out they must've acquired the Largo catalogue here at some point, and that explains why Criterion hadn't announced Malcolm X here yet (and now we definitely won't see Point Break from Arrow either).

I'd be delighted if City of Industry got a release. Harvey Keitel is intense in that film. Always find it a really entertaining watch.

Wouldn't say no to another Blu-ray of Affliction either.

Enjoyed this movie for what it was, a low-budget attempt at doing something Coen Bros, Tarantino-ish. Came off a bit too mean-spirited and the sequence of misfortunes eventually piled up so much that all I could do was laugh. Still, a decent movie wearing its influences on its sleeve, and I particularly enjoyed the transition from
[Show spoiler]the multiple-way standoff to the last man standing's dilemma.

Thought to myself that I'd like to see what the director could think up with a bigger budget. Went online, Googled him and... he will direct the next Evil Dead movie. F-sake.

Are the IOSS with Arrow UK back or was mine a one-off? Just had to pay duty on my Crimson Peak order from the UK (sent to Germany), IOSS number on the package is IM6160001121 which should be the correct one unless it changed again.

There are two reports at movieside.de with no (resp. not working) IOSS and according charges with Arrow orders (both UK I think), I just checked my "Crimson Peak" Arrow UK order at the Deutsche Pack tracking and it looks as if it's goingt to my customs office, so yes, the problem is back.

The first person received a refund, the other person has been told by the Arrow support TM that such charges are his problem... (the latter was re. a former problem if I got that right, so they might refund in this case as well, if he asks them)

Your IOSS number also matches the one on the photo of the not functioning package posted by one of the 2 guys. And I'm sure it will match mine when I have to collect my package from customs. Yay.

Count me in as having customs problems as well.
I used a £15 store credit to order 3 items (only ended up paying shipping), and now I'm getting a customs bill that is more than what I actually paid for the order. Just great.

Which reminds me, they never refunded my customs charges for another order from last year. Told me to pay the customs bill and they would refund the charges, but never did.
I thought it was safe to order from them (received 3 orders last month with no problems), I guess I'll have to pause ordering from them again.

Have long been thinking that myself, which is why I've held off from getting the US Blu-ray release. High on my want list, especially after seeing some example screencaptures (on here and DVD Beaver).

Me too. I look at it regularly in my Amazon basket and holding off. Especially since it’s available on the Amazons like for Germany without import fees or shipping cost. But I would like to have a chunky Arrow box that comes with it. This is the UK link for the US release: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Invasion-Ma.../dp/B0C24QGWS5

Add me to the list of folks with customs issues as well. Their customer service has been "investigating" for a few days...
