Default Question regarding Mcacc setup.

Everytime i have ran the mcacc setup on my pioneer sc -05 it says the sub is too loud and to turn it down. but i have always just pressed "skip" and continued on with the process. it dawned on me today and i was curious am i skipping the sub getting the full mcacc treatment by doing this? example eq'ed, standing waves etc? i want to EQ my sub into having a "tighter" bass sound. thanks.

you have either a one or a culmination of the following:

- your sub gain as mentioned is running too high,
- your sub placement is too close to the walls, causing the room to interact with it too much, resulting in a 'boomy' room.
- the sub may boomy by nature

to address these you would like to
- turn down the gain, calibrate it using a SPL meter
- subwoofer placement is key to have a nice tight signal as a result.
- to have a better idea, you want it a tad farther away from the walls, and move it around to see the ideal placement. i was looking at your gallery, and couldnt find any pictures of it.
- you can also do the subwoofer crawl too.

The "other guy" nailed it, along with crackinhedz above. I always get the same with MCACC on my SC-05, but do not skip it. I simply turn down the gain a little bit and retry. This should work and allow you to get the full beneifts of MCACC, which I think is very good with the calibration set-up.

To this day, I still do not understand why the SC-05 does not allow you to change the individual crossover settings for each speaker. I find this to be the biggest omission on this receiver. So, MCACC better be pretty good if I can't change them, and luckily it is. However, I still would have liked the option, especially for a receiver of this caliber.

it seems to be limited to most of the elite series i think, with Pioneer 'assuming' that the crossover should start ONLY at 80hz, and most speakers are built the same at this point.

Sad tho, the SC01 was a perfect model, until i checked out the crossover variances it offered.

Now wheres that posting i always use about MCACC...

Have you turned down the gain and retried running MCACC with the sub recognized by the calibration set-up yet? Do that before moving the sub around just to have some kind of starting point.

great looking room canvas, very nice and er... crate and barrel-ey, and of course in a good way.

okay, back to technicalities...

1. how far is the subwoofer from the wall?
2. hows your crossover settings on your speakers? Large? small?
3. Subwoofer setting at SB or SB Plus?
4. placement proposition - in that room, where do you think you can drop it if ever needed to be moved?

solutions to my inquiries
1. if you could possibly move it farther from the corner, and a little bit towards the living space. rule of thumb guides us to place it at a quarter of the entire length of the room.
2.-3. if set at LARGE you might be getting too much bass from too many sources. its difficult enough to calibrate one source (subwoofer), what more three - albeit this can also apply for multiple subwoofers, placement always helps out, and a lot of calibration to get them to play well.
4. Before moving your sub at all, try to see how your mains are interacting with the room.
- turn off your subwoofer power (dont fiddle with the AVRs setting)
- play a cd on STEREO,
- and see how that feels
- too much? check the crossover settings again
- too little? thats what the subwoofers there for.
- we are trying to eliminate the 'other' sources of 'boominess' prior to luggin around that subwoofer.
4.1 sitting on your couch, on the far left end, where the lamp is, would be a starting point.

id also suggest in getting bass traps, you may be in for a surprise when we can address standing waves with em. and it definitely would clean up what your rooms introducing.

heck you can even throw in a isolator/riser as others have done here, and call me in the morning.
