I really like the Hobbit films. Too bad the 4K's look like total crap.

I am, finally, getting around to watching Five Armies in 4k. I'm less than half and hour in, and --whereas the first two movies look really good-- this looks terrible. Just horrible. Everything looks overexposed--in particular the scenes where the people of Lake Town are gathering on the shore after Lake Town has been destroyed.
I don't want to read 99 pages of discussion on the 4ks of these movies, but what's going on? Is this just me? |

Yeah 3 may be the worst offender but the oversharpened color tinkered look of them kills these transfers. Yeah the colors are "more natural" than the fairy tail tints of the original Hobbit color timing but compare the eagles in Unexpected Journey. In the old color timing the effects blend rather well and look horrible with the oversharpened "natural" colors. |

IDK, if there are claims that THE HOBBIT didn't do well financially, that's completely erroneous.
I watched the first movie in IMAX with HFR and hated it so much, that I watched Pt.2 at home on blu-ray from a Netflix rental, and never watched the third installment. I will not make claim that it wasn't successful just because I personally hated it. Here's a breakdown: Hobbit 1 - $200 million budget, roughly Hobbit 2 - $250 million Hobbit 3 - $250 million. - Thing is, they were made at the same time, so I'd wager the actual budget of these movies is about half of what the claimed $700 million budget is 'on paper'. I guess it cost about $300-$350 million to make. Hobbit Pt.1 - $1,014,938,545 Hobbit Pt.2 - $959,358,436 - Percentage drop in returns vs. first movie: -5% (outstanding box office retention result.) Hobbit Pt.3 - $940,323,039 - Percentage drop in returns vs. second movie: -2% (unbelievable box office retention result.) -- Percentage drop in returns vs. first movie: -7% (highly respectable level of retention from first to third movie) Total box office gross of all three movies: $2,914,620,020 To proclaim that it was a "flop" is a joke. OK, now that THAT has been settled, let's move on. Last edited by KcMsterpce; 11-10-2024 at 03:42 PM. |

Interesting to read this. The LOTR 4K are deeply flawed but ultimately I prefer them to the blu-rays, especially Fellowship. But The Hobbit 4Ks are truly unwatchable to me, especially Five Armies.
I also think it’s important to remember that Unexpected Journey has a different look than both sequels. It’s far more colorful and fairy tale looking, while the sequels drain color away and often look more like a Demon’s Souls game. On pure visuals, I think the 1080 version of Unexpected Journey is a mostly stunning looking film, in 2D or 3D, and I also really don’t like the newly desaturated ‘flashback’ scenes either. |

Well, you lot are right. The outdoor scenes in Bot5A look the same in the theatrical and extended versions, and look the same regardless of which player I use. So it's neither a defective disk nor a wonky player; it's the movie.
Therefore, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies gets the Grand Prize for the worst-looking 4k I have ever seen. Congratulations! |
