I am working on a gift. However, God is on my side. Currently, the driver is in a bad box. The other night she told me that she heard distortion from the subwoofer. Immediately, I jumped in and said that the cabinet is faulty and I have plans to build a better and larger cabinet.

Somebody up there is on my side and doesn't want me dead.

Lol - Even BD has the Mrs. "tuned in" to faulty audio!

I am building one of these just in case. I need to sleep somewhere.

I don't think she will allow me to have a more luxurious dog house.

On a more serious note, I am actually building a riser for this subwoofer. It is more a dolly than a riser. I have already ordered 4 casters with brakes. The diameter of the wheels are 5". I need to go to Home Depot and buy some wood. I believe a very strong 5 layered plywood will work better than MDF wood. I will put carpet on top and lots of foam underneath it. The advantage of the dolly is that I won't have to carry the heavy monster around and it should raise the subwoofer around 6".

I totally agree on the thick plywood , Much stronger & will hold up much better to the load & weight ! Best place for the casters is directly under the subs legs but I know you know that BD & I hope they have good locks on them or that thing will be rolling around all over

Let us know how that turns out BD. This will give me some ideas on what to do when I have enough funds to do what I want.

The subwoofer box will be delivered in 3-4 weeks. I will wait until it is here before I completely commit to a riser.

These are the casters I ordered. It is the cheapest price I have ever found for 5" casters. Normally, they are around $20 each. The weight capacity of each caster is 150 lbs. With 4 of them, it should be more than enough to support the subwoofer.

I ordered the middle casters. They are swivel kind with brakes and $4.90 each.

No, there will still be 4 subwoofers and they will be placed in the middle of the 4 walls. I will take the Titanic driver out of the current cabinet and put it in the new box. The older cabinet is not a bad one. It is smaller and tuned around 35Hz. It is more appropriate for a car subwoofer than a home theater sub.

In car audio, the low frequency rarely goes below 30Hz. Therefore, subwoofer boxes are tuned 30Hz-40Hz. Since human hearing is more sensitive to upper bass frequencies and car audio fanatics are bass freaks, that works perfectly for them. You can hear the bass sound from 10 blocks away.

In home theater applications, the low frequency of some recennt movies go down to 20Hz or below. When a driver is put in a box that is tuned around 35Hz, a significant portion of the sound will be below this tuning. The driver will receive no support from the back waves in the box under the tuned frequency and will unload and can extend beyond its capability and fail. That is why HT subwoofer boxes are tuned in the low 20's or below. One of the advantages of polyfill is that it slightly lowers the tuning frequency of the box. Not only will the subwoofer sound better and tighter, the driver will also receive more support and last longer.

To make a box tuned lower, you need to make it larger and make the length of the port longer.

If you have a subwoofer box that is tuned too high, you should add a subsonic filter to it to block very low frequency waves.

I paid $100 for this box, including shipping. It is a 15" box and can be used by anyone who needs it. I am willing to give it away. Unfortunately, shipping will probably cost around $30 or more.

That was your lesson for today. There will be a quiz tomorrow.
