This looks great! I’ve never played the series outside of Mafia II remake but I love a linear narrative driven game that doesn’t last HOURS.

Playing Mafia II Definitive Edition. Not very definitve on console since there are still visual bugs here and there, audio cutouts and massive frame drops in cutscenes. But I kind of dig the unpolish. I know when they worked on the PS3 version 2K and Take Two were mismanaged and handled the game and it's release and the company horribly.

Mafia Definitive Edition is amazing and I think that's what Mafia Old Country is trying to achieve. That's why I plan on supporting Hanger 13 and getting it day one. It's only 1 of 3 games this year I plan on doing.

Mafia 2 PS4 in 1080p and better framerate in general, and looks much nicer than the jagged edges and lower polygons of Mafia 2 in 720p on PS3. Very nice on PS5 too for Mafia 2 Definitive.
Mafia 1 remake, nice game too. That should've gotten PS5 treatment as it released shortly before PS5's launch in 2020.

Same here, the Mafia games are fun games for the most part.

I enjoyed Mafia 2 a lot on PS3, but after finishing the story there's no free roaming unless you go back to a specific mission then you can drive around. Still haven't played Mafia 1 Remake really want, though.

Mafia Remake, very good. I completed it from the disc, despite some bugs in the cutscenes. Nice graphics too. Plus it adds motorcycles.

Mafia Old Country will add horses.

If you liked the 2nd, you'll like the 1st one. But play the remake.

I will say though that that racing mission is trash.

That race car in the track was a tough race with the time limit. Had to try a few times to get it. They did a nice job on the map and I liked the countryside too.

The improved gun combat was good also. They also do well with the atmosphere of the city, sound effects, and graphics.

This new one in only a few months in August. A nice surprise.

I've been playing Mafia 1 Remake on my hacked PS4 Pro and you know what, the 30fps was bothering me so much (it felt so slow and sluggish) that I ended up using a tool to force the game to run at 60fps. Much better now!

Anyway, I agree the race mission was a bit of a chore although I liked it
It reminded me of a Dreamcast game...

Developers should really aim to make their games run at 60fps, 30fps isn't really a great option anymore not even for a "cinematic" experience.

Consistent 30 fps I can still handle no problem, but 60 fps smooths things out really nicely and most times in polygon games, is preferred.

For 2D games though, 30 fps works without issues most times.

With Mafia Remake, that's 30 fps on PS4, but plays fine IMO along with Mafia 2 remaster and Mafia 3.

Mafia 3, that's the closest game to Driver 1 since the muscle cars of Driver Parallel Lines.

They really need to aim to make The Old Country run at 60fps on all platforms it'll be released. I'd love to see the Mafia games ported to Switch 2 all in 60fps.

I'm also revisiting the remake. It could really do with a native PS5 version and I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen one as with a few improvements, that the power of the PS5 could perhaps help with, it could be a very good looking game. The art direction and world they've built is fantastic and character models and animations are good but from a technical perspective it is unfortunately quite lacking. Aside from the obvious fact that it is limited to an actually quite palatable 30FPS presentation, there is an abundance of aliasing and the draw distance is frankly awful with objects losing substantial amounts of detail sometimes from mere metres away. When driving, cars in the distance often seem to be half constructed and there's just a general abundance of pop in. Shadow quality is also quite poor and daytime lighting feels quite flat. The screenspace reflections are also kind of odd on the cars to the point where a reflection solution that is less detailed might look better if RTX isn't an option. It's a real shame because if the world all loaded and ran as it ideally would, it would no doubt be a fantastic looking game.

I've never looked to see how the PC version differs. I can't really tell if these issues have come from optimising for the last generation of consoles or simply an issue with Hangar 13 and their former engine.

Still no disc version for Mafia Old Country to pre order.............. That can't be good at this point. I'll get the game no matter what but that's disappointing.

I still remember Mafia remake launching just before PS5, in November 2020.
Did you know they patched the section of the game that lets you sneak outside of the walls of the map? It was in the left hand mid side of the full map view, near the train area in the corner by some trees against the brick wall on the right.

I would sneak in there easily but in the update, no more as they walled it off with the invisible wall. I have the game on disc so I can easily access that older version with that access if I want. Only reason I updated the game (after completing it on disc) was to see if there were any new modes but to fix the cutscenes where the guy is glitching into the front hood engine firing his machine gun at the bad guys.

You're right, for PS5, 60 fps should be their goal as an option.

I'd take inferior graphics and 60fps than better graphics if it were on Switch 2, tbh.

Personally given the Switch 2 won't have graphics as good as PS5 games still for the most part, i'd rather buy a PS5 if i didn't have one already to play these games and wait for Switch 2 to drop down in price. Especially given the $80 games they've announced as the starting price.

This looks good and i would want to play, but i am a dinosaur and although £40 new is the maximum price i'd pay, this isn't going to match the length of games i'd usually play in this vein and Mafia games have dropped down quickly in price in comparison to RDR or GTA titles so i definitely see this being half price by black friday or the holidays.

I should replay Mafia 3 again as it's been a couple years. Long loading screen at first. That game I have on disc but decided to update it before completing that game on PS4 as the civilians clothes were glitching badly, flickering to the point the immersion in the game was broken. That was the only issue I had other than the pixelated muddy reflections in the water.

How would you rank the Mafia games?

Mafia 2 remaster (PS4) much better than the PS3 version IMO.
Mafia remake (PS4) Very nice.
Mafia 3. A fun game and closest thing to a modern Driver 1.

Mafia 4 Old Country, TBD. To be determined soon. August 8th, that is nice and not August 31st, as most games tend to release at the end of a month.

I wonder if that $80 price point will stick for the long term or just in place for the time being? Nintendo are showing how greedy they really can be. That is a ridiculous price and they're trying to set an example for other big studios to greedily follow.

But maybe the big AAA developers need all that money to stay in business for some of them struggling to break even despite all of the revenue.

Then Hangar 13 walks in and offers their brand new Mafia game for 49.99.
I didn't see any city with cars yet, so maybe that's part of the bargain price that would be expected for a new PS3 game in 2006. It's a great price for a new medium studio game. Or is Hanger 13 a large studio?

https://hangar13games.com/games/
I guess they're large as they had an unannounced game called
[Show spoiler]Volt in 2021 that was canceled after $53 million dollars was spent on the budget and the game wasn't finished.
Plus they had layoffs in 2022 to slim down the team. 2022 when they started work on Mafia Old Country.

Mafia 4 technically.

I took a look and I see that Mafia The Old Country isn't available to pre-order on US Amazon. I'm sure it will appear there since I also took a look at both CAN Amazon and UK Amazon and it's available to pre-order on those sites.

Looks like the US price for this game is $49.99 USD.

The UK price is £37.49 (though on Amazon right now to pre-order it's £33.29, which sounds like a good deal. That makes it roughly $45 USD)

In Canada, on Amazon, to pre-order it's $69.99 CAD (ugh, I can only hope that lowers a bit more eventually).

So when compared to other games this seems pretty fair. Yes, it'll be a shorter game than something like a Last of Us Part II but it aims to be just as good when it comes to story. Hangar 13 want you to experience an entertaining and well made story. That's what I'm seeing from the trailers. I trust this team since they won me over with the other games.

And hey, who knows. Maybe if people vote with their wallet with games like this (and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33) more companies will charge better prices for games.

I've been playing Mafia 1 and am currently stuck on the turret part of "Trip to the Country" I just have to keep trying.

Precise aiming with a controller is a headache.

August 8th is not far away with June here now. I hope they get a disc version up soon, but no hurry as the digital version isn't going anywhere. 49.99 is the price I'll go for either way, but aiming for the disc as that's a collectible and this team tends to have a fully playable game on the disc thankfully!

Good news, cars are confirmed in the game. No sign of motorcycles but they already had them in Mafia 1 remake, so I can hope.

It can be a challenging game at times, yes.

I like the whole city and being able to go into the country is fun too. On the disc version without any updates, there is a way to sneak into the upper left part of the map that is barred off, which is kind of fun but limited. They sealed it off in the updated version. Mafia 1 remake. Very good game.
