Is the Atmos mix dynamic with some nice transients or just compressed to sound really loud?

Definitely, one of the scenes that looks terrible. Which scenes have got it bad overall? And what all went wrong with this scene? Just DNR and wrong color grading?

This!

Sick of Atmos mixes just being loud, no cool directional discreet channel separation just loud

Less DNR, better colour.
That's actually quite more of a significant improvement than others were making it out to be, slay
EDIT: saw the rest, still an improvement but it seems like the underlying scan isn't good either, doesn't help that the remaster itself is messy

The improvements are quite nice, but the film is far from what it could and should look like. The effects scenes still suffer from DNR and the color grading is still wrong. It's embarrassing that Universal still can't get it right and was much closer to the original look in 2013.

To recap hardware, the display is a well set-up LG 83" C4 OLED. The Atmos audio is powered by Denon with a combination of KEF (fronts), B&W (surrounds and height). Already mentioned the subs.

Cutting right to the chase, this remaster is not just good, but bordering on spectacular. Whatever flaws one may nitpick in still frames I am quite certain lie in the source, not the transfer or encode. The Dolby Vision grade offers exceptional depth and dimensionality with virtually perfect black level, contract and color density. Fine detail is excellent without a trace of over enhancement or obvious processing.

What about the audio, right? The first wide release with DTS sound, right? You remember the '90s version of DTS with overcooked bass and sketchy highs and mids, right? Well this astounding Atmos track will make you forget about DTS, assuming one has a system to do it justice. Low frequencies will rattle whatever is not nailed down while dialog and effects clarity is superb. This Atmos mix make excellent use of height and surround channels. This is what Atmos was made for. A perfect compliment to the gorgeous visuals.

I'm not going to say this is the best 4K disc I've seen, but I can't think of one that is better. Enjoy the show.
I've "known" you for a while on various home theater and physical media forums...THANK YOU for cutting through the BS and giving real impressions on a capable system. I will be enjoying this much like you just posted.

Very strange, with some shots Universal seems to have tried to get closer to the original look of the 35 mm prints.

https://slow.pics/c/iaHUFDOS

In other shots they simply didn't do anything at all. And in yet other shots, all they had to do was add a little more yellow and saturation.

Just curious. Did you have the original 4K disc on hand to compare, or are your impressions here strictly informed by the new UHD on its own?

Outside of tighter grain retention and the red push being dialed back in the badlands sequence, I’m just not seeing a whole lot of difference based on the direct screencaps. Certainly nothing like the type of re-grade many here would have hoped to see.

Apologies to everyone for being a stick in the mud, but what is clearly the existing master with minimal tweaks isn’t doing it for me. Simply put, the continued lack of transparency with this particular Spielberg title continues to frustrate.

Glad the DNR is dialed back though.

I think people are getting too in the weeds about what JP should look like or what JP deserves to look like and disregarding nuance. No one is saying this is a new 4k OCN scan referencing a print, no one is saying that happening wouldn't be a glorious day in home video history. The relevant question is simply how big an improvement it is over the previous UHD, and whether that's worth the money.

"This looks like a decent upgrade"... "well it's not a new scan! JP deserves a new scan!!!"... like yeah, we know. Everyone wants that.

Are you referring to the Jurassic Park trilogy or both sets of trilogy's? Since I have both on pre-order not sure if it's worth to keep the Jurassic World trilogy or stick with the original Jurassic Park trilogy.

A new scan would not have been necessary at all, simply remove the DNR completely and create a regrade. If you look at what Kino Lorber was able to get out of the yellow Italian restoration of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, it would have been easy for Universal to create a worthy release here. The scan was never the problem, it was the unprofessional postproduction.

DV being added to Jurassic World is the only difference, right? I really doubt they regraded that movie or made significant changes to it, and on a quality set I certainly don't think DV is a $60 upgrade on its own. I can barely tell the difference when comparing DV and no DV, nine times out of ten.

I have only the first three films at this moment. The only one in the second set that I am interested in is the fourth film for the new Dolby Vision grade. The fifth and sixth are already DV transfers, but I'll be curious to see if they are also remastered or simply the previous discs in a new box. Should have those in hand tomorrow.

RE: Atmos mix...

I evaluate film soundtracks for primarily three factors, clarity, balance and dynamic range. The Atmos mix for the Jurassic Park remaster excels in all three. Assuming one is not listening on some cheap sound bar, or worse, TV speakers, expect to be grabbing for the volume control if the overall volume is set for dialog level (or not, in my case). Yes, dialog and the more subtle effects are well balanced with excellent clarity and precision. The score has some nice dynamics and adds a lush fullness where it should. Then there will come one of the many bass hits and, if you set the volume for dialog and most effects and your sub(s) is up to the task, you WILL feel in your chest.

This is a classic Spielbergian thrill ride, finally done justice.

Respectfully disagree. To me “too in the weeds” is when people dismiss otherwise excellent masters based on minutia alone.

Trotting out an inherently flawed old master (again, with minimal improvements) and marketing it as new is something that warrants consumer scrutiny, if not outright admonishment. Especially when it’s being pushed as limited and sold at a premium price.

And just to reiterate- it’s Universal’s continued lack of transparency, going back to the original blu-ray set really, that amplifies frustration.

With this latest release they gave us just enough information to know that these would be different discs than those we already own, but then zero specifics beyond the inclusion of Dolby Vision/Atmos. IMO as the target audience we really shouldn’t have to be analyzing screencaps to figure out exactly what it is we have.

I don't really think three movies for $60 is a premium price. Not saying it's cheap either, more low-average. Also it's not like there's some massive hoopla around it either from them, really. Nothing more than the average PR campaign. No one is forced to buy it, people can wait for word of mouth from trusted sources if they want. I'm sure there will also be some standard edition eventually, since it's not Sony.

Don't get me wrong, Universal not truly redoing this movie (assuming they can) is truly baffling and wrong. However I don't see anything directly nefarious here either. If anything I'm pleasantly surprised they actually put effort in to give us something better, even if it's not what we truly want.

But honestly this gets into ye olde glass half full versus glass half empty debate that I have all the time on this forum (and the internet in general honestly) and really the reaction is just different personalities doing what they do.

I'm hype to see this cherished film looking better. I guess I'm easy, but maybe life's more fun when you're more easily pleased
