you have to run the optical if u have a receiver that doesnt take hdmi or analog inputs from ur blu player...

Mine does have HDMI input and an output. I was just wondering if by using HDMI stricly for video and optical for audio it would help the sound at all. However I noticed that when I added the optical, my receiver doesnt display multi-channel anymore... it just shows stereo, dolby digital, mono etc...

You definitely want to use HDMI. You aren't able to pass the new surround sound format via optical. HDMI is the only way to achieve Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA. The only reason I have found to use another audio connection in addtion to HDMI is the analog cables. Some people use the PS3 to hear music throughout their home which requires an analog audio source.

sorry mroe3469, I still haven't brought the slim downstairs to test for audio output

like i said earlier, just a week or so ago i ran my ps3 audio to my Panny plasma via hdmi and to the receiver via optical (my receiver only has one optical input and no hdmi) I was getting everything to pass thru fine, except today i popped in X-Men the Last Stand- and am getting no sound, maybe DTS-HD track only movies can't downgrade to compressed DTS when passed thru my tv?
