Has anyone else noticed how warm discs can get in the PS5’s drive after extended gameplay? This cant be great for longevity.
In the end you just accept that nothing lasts forever or you go crazy from such thoughts. With so many games I'm unlikely to go back to any game in 20-30 years. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the discs outlive me because I'm already 40. Maybe that's why I started aiming for platinum more. So that I would never go back to them again and consider them completely finished. Yesterday, Alan Wake 2's disc got noticeably hot after 2 hours of play. I've never paid attention to this and would never worry about something like this.

“Mystic” Ryan just put out a great video where he interviews Lost in Cult’s Ryan Brown about the state of physical games releases. This thread feels like a good place to post it.

Also, my copy of Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark came in my my partner snatched it away to return as a birthday gift in a few weeks.

I wonder if anybody even still makes disc games that are actually on the disc.

It depends. AAA games are increasingly being released on disc or cart with incomplete builds, but the majority of non-AAA games are complete or contain a stable enough build to play through the game without patches, sizable content downloads, or a required internet connection.

Doesitplay.org is an effort to test on-disc and on-cart builds and document their stability and completeness.

Emily (Orbalology) has a great video dispelling myths and misinformation regarding on disc and cart content.

Most publishers do. Off the top of my head Ubisoft and Microsoft (and their subsidiaries) are the only companies that consistently require downloads.

Check out DoesItPlay.org for more information. 89% of the PS5 disc games they've tested can be completed without any downloads.

Dispelling Misinformation About Modern Physical Games - YouTube
I've about gone blue in the face trying to dispel this myth. Its so incredibly false, at least on PS4/PS5 (Xbox is increasingly a lost cause, I think), but so many people out there just believe it. I think it is partially because of some of the high-profile cases that blew up in the news like Hogwarts Legacy and partially because people see disc games "downloading" and think its downloading the game from the internet

Again, EXCELLENT resource! I'm a patreon supporter of their group and can't recommend it enough.

Just the misconception a lot of people have, essentially that PS4 era and especially PS5 era discs are "Product Key Check Discs" and nothing more. Sure, more incomplete discs have popped up in recent years, but the majority of games are still on the disc. They just have to be downloaded from the disc and installed, instead of playing straight from the disc like the PS2 days.

I totally agree. But I appreciate threads like this, in order to avoid cases like Doom: The Dark Ages.

Crow Country is getting standard and deluxe physical editions courtesy of FanGamer for Switch and PS5. Set to ship November 7th.

I quite enjoyed it. Don't think I'll need it on my shelf though.

If anyone is interested, I finally opened my PS5 copy of Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Ultimate. I played for a couple of hours and the build seems stable. There is some slowdown during crowded encounters, but nothing like the PS4 version. Doesitplay has a write up on the Switch version, but nothing for the PS5 disc yet.

I don't like spirit of the north 2 btw lol. I'm maybe halfway through but think I'm going to bail and play Industria until bloom and rage comes out.

Yeah, I've heard some mixed things about SotN2, hope you enjoy Industria more.

Not checking the board this week because I'm on vacation but I wanted to record Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (which has been out digitally for a while) installs as 2.003.001, and there is an update to 2.004.000.

That's good to hear, glad you scored yourself a copy. The second hand market has been kinda rough on some of these new releases lately
