I've come to think that 4K/UHD is such a slight and marginal improvement over a well done 1080p blu ray that it really is mostly a waste of time, effort, and money to produce them when there are so many movies that could benefit from a much bigger improvement being upgraded from DVD or VHS.

Oh that's the ONE film, eh? So now your argument is "4k is like seeing a film for the first time...unless it's Scarface '32"?

In this very thread, didn't The Boogens turn heads in the opposite direction? Can we shift the goalposts again to include that one too?

I love 4K it’s just expensive that’s all. I only have sommuchnto spend and even non 4k releases can be pricey. If you buy physical media your basically a hobbies who doesn’t just buy one release so can write off an expensive one of product. We are building a library/collection otherwise we wouldn’t be on here chatting. Sometimes I just can’t afford the 4k

I like 4k but I’m starting to think along the lines thst often it’s just not worth the extra price for so little improvement. They really neeed to bring the price down. It’s in everyone’s interest if more people get into 4k. Part of me regrets getting a player. Mainly because I often can’t justify buying the 4k release. Hopefully things improve and prices come down

You made a claim, which at its core is all 4k>Blu-ray, that is demonstrably false. This is the lashing out of somebody unable to accept defeat graciously. If you need more examples where Blu-rays are either superior or, at worst, equal to their 4k counterpart, you can find them at this forum or elsewhere via a simple Google search.

As for "my contributions", I have regularly posted mini-reviews of under-the-radar Kino titles in this thread for nearly a decade, in addition to the handful of directors/actors threads on the main board. Please let me know if you'd like links to them. What have you done in your brief tenure here, other than cry about "muh 4ks"?

I don't have a 4K setup. I'm good with Blu-ray. What is aggravating is when new restorations aren't put on BD and are exclusive to UHD. Films such as Le Samourai, Days of Heaven, Wings of Desire, Three Colors Trilogy, Dirty Harry, and all the Universal Hitchcock films. These are some of my favorite movies and this situation causes me to consider biting the bullet and getting a 4K setup. BUT, I read so many complaints about the format that it seems like so much of a headache that I'd rather just settle with what I already have.

Been here since 2012.

And now I get where your aggression comes from. You’re anti 4K. You fear having to update your collection again so you make up in your mind that 4K is pointless to convince yourself not to give in. It’s cool, dude, but 4K is better. That is not debatable. Have a nice day

I've always appreciated when you contribute thoughts and opinions on films, not so much when you sound like Bates Motel at his worst. You arent him under another name are you? But then again I am just one of the people who come out of the woodwork to wag my finger that Cinema was mentioning, so what do I know

Take a month off from creating 12 accounts a day. That’s really sad. What are you hoping to accomplish by stalking me? I’ll let you in on a little secret, loser. You’re accomplishing NOTHING. I’m guessing you spend so much time in that basement because you can’t function in the outside world. Sad

I own quite a few 4ks, and have said elsewhere that there's definitely a place for the format. Is this really your pivot after getting embarrassed on your previous point?

Has anyone ever noticed that the people that incessively post the most on these threads usually have the most problems with other users? It can't be coincidence that Driver is one of the most controversial posters.

Controversial how? Do I harass people? Do I hurl insults? Am I “controversial” because I like to participate more than just once a month? That would be silly

No, DWII was added later. We still have 2 1960s and 2 1970s.

I jumped into DVD when the original release of The Matrix hit at $14.99. While I had VHS titles and had friends with laserdisc prior to that, it was that (relatively) low entry price that got me in, so I understand the logic you're presenting. $14.99 was still higher than impulse-buy like it is today. Inflation puts it about $29.50 now, which is about what most vanilla releases go for, so we may need to recalibrate how we see things. Dunno...

Relatively, that's still a low price. Boutique/limited/fancy releases with higher prices notwithstanding, things are not that expensive for this premium niche.

For what it's worth, my take on the blu ray / 4k / DVD discussion - I think if you took a genuine look at the wider home entertainment marketplace most people do not the amount of consideration into their set-up as a lot of people on this forum will.

They'll go into Best-Buy (or wherever) and they'll mainly buy on price - the brand chosen may play a role - but I would wager that for the most part these consumers will be price driven. They won't know what OLED is, mini-LED or what ever, and probably won't care all that much either - they just want a decent TV that won't break their bank / budget.

These are the people who wouldn't really be able to tell you if they're watching a DVD or blu ray if blind tested on a disc. These people aren't going to pay the premium for 4K as they won't see the value in it, nor will they have the right set-up to get the best out of the format - assuming they even have a device that can play back UHDs.

As to whether a 4K is really worth the extra cash - I think it depends on two things - your set up and therefore the quality of the equipment used; and the mastering of the disc itself.

Some previously mentioned LD - I've been into LD since the mid-90s when the format was still current, so I'm not new to it. Disc mastering plays a huge role in how good these discs look, especially when using modern TVs. I've got a very expensive set-up, using a Hi-Vision LD player - now, with the right disc, there are some films that are better than their DVD counterparts for picture quality. But only some.
I've never seen an LD look better than a blu ray, and I don't think I could take anyone seriously who believes this is the case.

Generally, all the blu rays I've upgraded to, the picture is noticeably better than the DVD. Again, very few instances where the DVD holds up well enough to say it wasn't worth the upgrade. And again we're using high end kit to compare these discs with.

With 4K, I don't generally see the night and day difference between the 4K and the blu ray, and the mastering will play a role in that. The differences may be even less noticeable on lower end kit.

A good test for me will be when the 4K of Death Wish 3 comes out. I've got the Scorpion blu ray and it looks really good, so I'll be interested to see whether the 4K transfer is that much superior. If it isn't, I certainly wouldn't bother getting a 4K of DW4, as that too has a good transfer.

TLDR; your mileage may vary, but playback quality will depend very much on the kit used and the mastering of the disc.
