Default Reciever Advice Please.

Well i just upgraded my speakers. I ordered some B&W speakers, and i wanna get a reciever so i can power my speakers, and make them. What i have right now is just a onkyo HTIB, no Hd sound cabilties. I have narrowed it down to two different recievers i think. They are both about the same and have pretty much the same wattage. They are both about the sme price around 500.
1. Is a marantz 5003, brand new from 6ave.
2. Is a used pioneer elite vsx03 from audiogon

The negative about buyin the pioneer is, I am just afraid to buy from audiogon, I don't know how safe it is. Also if there is something wrong i can't return it.
I wanna try to get it ordered soon so i can have it in, by the time my speakers come in.
ANy thouhgts would be very helpful. Thaks in advance.

You have a ton of options.

Firstly the Marantz 6003 can be had for not too much more than the 5003 right now. Also, I wouldn't buy a used receiver unless it was a store model from an authorized dealer so you still get warranty coverage.

Secondly, I think your speakers are probably more power hungry than a receiver can generally provide (which speakers did you get?). So you should be considering an external amplifier and using a receiver that has pre-outs.

The Marantz 5/6003 and Pioneer Elites all have pre-outs. Also, I would look at a higher end Onkyo like the TX-SR876 if you're not too interested in an external amplifier. If you are going to consider a separate amplifier, than the Yamaha RX-V765 has some really nice processing capabilities and can be had for around $450 if you look around long enough.

No sense in marrying awesome B&W speakers to an unworthy receiver. The 6003 is $700 at all the most reputable retailers now, has all the pre-outs, is bi-amp capable, and is a great-sounding receiver. That's a bit of a head-scratcher, though... I'd always figured anybody that would invest in B&W's would be in the market for top-line separates, or something to that effect.

Just grab the 5003, you don't need a lot of power to drive an HT and you can always add an amp to drive your mains if needed in the future. The 5003 has the pre-outs

for sure, last thing you want is to be scammed with a broken receiver Or Yes If your getting a nice deal on it from a friend for cheap.

i say you should Look at Denon AVR-5308CI: Reference A/V,i have an Onkyo 706,its great and all with pre-outs for an Amp but this thing tends to get hot and it's known to be...

kind of a draw away for me with the heat it produce's in my room on hot days lol.

I can tell you that most people on Audiogon are very reputable, and are very much into HT like yourself, if not more. So, they do take care of their stuff and most want to keep a good reputation on that site, so I will say the odds of you getting a big paper weight from Audiogon are quite low. Also, for $500, the 03' is a very good price, especially if it has been taken care of, like I bet it has. Just my 2 cents.

Well thanks for replying everyone. I plan on getting more power with a amp eventually. I just got th 684's in the B&W series. I would love to get a top of the line reciever but i just don't have the money right now. That's why i wanted to stick in the 500 price range.
