Default DTS Inc CEO Jon Kirchner: 12% of our revenue came from the high-def formats

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...5d038334eba5f6

THR: Are you deriving more revenue from Blu-ray or HD DVD?

Kirchner: We do not disclose that. What I can say is that last quarter 12% of our revenue came from the high-def formats, and the biggest driver is the game platforms. Obviously, the PS3 is doing the most unit volume for us.

hmmm i think that answers the question about what format is brining in the money for them.

Not really, the PS3 as a gaming platform, most likly refers to codecs being licensed for playback on the PS3, and the license to encode/distribute on the games.

Which makes sense when you consider the PS3 is the gaming console pushing HD audio the most.

And 0% of PS3 owners can play back the full DTS-MA tracks.

Yet upconverting CDs, playing SACD and Dolby TrueHD is no problem.

DTS needs to stop tooting their horn and start offering solutions.

Well DTS HD MA is said to use HUGE amount of computer power to uncompress, more than TrueHD, it may be why the PS3 don't decode it.

2nd fact is : If the PS3 do DTS HD MA, DTS HD HR, Profile 1.1 and 2.0 right now. Sony just kill all their parterns...

What sony will do , i'am pretty sure of that, is gradually give us those option. Just like 24fps, once most of the player had it, they gave it to PS3. I'am pretty sure once they'll be a couple of player with DTS HD support, will see it pop for the PS3, same thing for the profiles...

As far as I can tell only Fox and Lionsgate use DTS-HD (either HR or MA) extensively and HD DVD don't really have enough bandwidth for anything more than DD or DD+ anyway (something like less than 20% of their titles have lossless audio) so it's not surprising most of DTS's revenue would come from the Blu-ray side, PS3 notwithstanding.

Well one thing that the PS3 has in abundance is computing power. I'll be surprised if it can't decode DTS-HD MA because of this reason.

From what I'm told, the difference in horses between DTS HDMA and THD are fairly minor

QFT

I still have to think some sort of financial arrangement has been made between Fox and DTS - why would they still cling to DTS-MA otherwise?

I think the PS3 not decoding DTS-HD MA is Sony's way of keeping the PS3 on par with the capabilities of the BD standalones. When it becomes more available across BD players, including Sony's own, they'll add it to the PS3. It's bad business to have one business group stomp on another. I try to keep in mind that PS3 hardware losses are subsidized by the PS3 game software and have a much longer window to turn a profit - 10+ years. I doubt that a player has 1/5th of that. I don't blame DTS.

I'm hoping Sony addresses this before Christmas, otherwise I'm gonna start taking a long, hard look at the new Samsung combo player coming out, which looks like it will indeed decode DTS-HR and DTS-MA (not to mention it will solve my 1080i only problem on the red side when I get a 1080p display).

The problem partially lies with me, as I was so excited about Blu's PCM capabilities that I upgraded my receiver to one that would accept PCM over HDMI before ones that would decode DTS-MA were out. If I had a receiver that decoded DTS-MA, I'd simply eBay my PS3 and get a Sammy 1400 (though I'd regret it as soon as a really good PS3 only game came out).
