The directors cut and the ultimate cut are two very different versions of the movie right?

I'm fairly certain it is just the same as The Director's Cut with Tales of the Black Freighter worked in, like the original graphic novel.

Then the standard release would have been overpriced and no one would have bought it. Plenty of people ended up getting it on BD on release day because it was reasonably priced and to this day sits atop the record for highest BDVD ratio software sale yet.

This isn't a "final cut". It's a "fetishistic" long cut. The director's cut is the REAL cut of the film. This cut is just a curiosity for rabid fans.

Technical specs seem to indicate that the package doesn't include Tales of the Black Freighter as a stand-alone feature. It's visible only intercut into the main feature.

I'm going to be hanging onto my copy of Tales for if I ever want to watch the simpler version of the feature (and ditto for my Director's Cut copy). Glad I never got around to buying the motion comic before though.

ps I don't think Paramount will ever get the rights to the animated material. Paramount only even has international distribution rights because of the legal situation. WB still holds the animated material in all regions though, and as long as their American release of the Ultimate Edition box will be region free, I think WB would rather have international collectors import than help Paramount line their pocket further by giving them permission to use the animated material.

I don't know which version I want...the DC or Ultimate Cut. I bought the DC at BB on Sun. I have 30 days to decide. Ultimate cut comes out 30 days after I bought DC so I timed it ok. I will wait and see what deals will be had on Ultimate Cut and maybe the DC will be on sale cheaper in 30 days.

I have the DC and I keep telling myself I don't need the UC, but I am pretty sure I will buy it anyway. Sheesh. Not the first time or last time I will double dip. Sometimes, it is worth it in the end.

I've been holding out from buying any release of this film for this Ultimate Cut. A definite purchase for me.

Here's my $.02: If you know that studios have a history of re-re-releasing films than this whole thing with Watchmen shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

I adore the film so I will gladly hand over my $ for a double dip. I'll just trade in my motion comic BD beforehand. Still going to keep my DC of the film though, want to own both cuts.

Not to mention the fact they...you know.... told us that this was coming when the original release was announced.

Next year they will probably release an edition with all 3 versions seamlessly branched: theatrical, director's and extended. Plus Black Freighter stand alone, Under the Hood, and all the extras.

Remember, Warner's also released 10 diff versions of Lord of the Rings and are apparently gearing up to do so again on blu.

And if they do that I'll then have 3 copies of the film.

They should do a cut that's not so faithful to the book, because that's what killed it, IMO. The book just isn't a movie. I liked it alot until the retarded sex scene... then the prison scene was great, probably my favorite in the movie. But once they left the city for the snow, the whole thing fell apart.

I waited on the DC so I could get this, so I'm pretty stoked. Not stoked about the price, though.

Does anyone know if this version will have the ability to watch the theatrical or directors cut as well, or is it only the ultimate cut?

As stated previously, the blu-ray features only the ultimate cut. Though there is a digital copy of the theatrical version included, as well.

No they will not. I explained this in the actual thread for this release, so I don't feel like getting into it again.

Basically, it's not technically possible to branch all 3 cuts together, mostly due to it not being feasible to branch the theatrical with the director's cut.
