I own 43 blu-ray movies at the moment and most of them represent the best of blu-ray what goes for AQ and PQ so im rather demanding especially with new blu-ray releases.

So the PQ in Star Trek is one of the best i have ever seen. The movie is filled with amazing effect which really come to life in blu-ray. Colors are vivid and the "Mass Effect like" lighting effects look especially good. Still the colors are not overly saturated (Transformers) and i think that skin tones were very good and natural. Also the amount of detail is amazing. Im not a big fan of film noise but there is just the right amount of it. All the little sparkles of light, colorful computer monitors on the ships and huge landescapes looks very sharp and nice. Also close shots of faces look very good as there are a lot of skin detail to bee seen. So the only thing that would have been better is if the whole movie would have been made in IMAX. I would say that the picture quality is atleast as good as in Transformers or Watchmen if not even better. It is not the Dark Knight IMAX regarding to image detail/sharpens but i thing it is the next best thing. But what really makes Star Trek stand out from all other BD movies and send it lightyears ahead is the incredible usage of lighting and the amount of different kind of effects. They really do make the movie to come alive and feel fresh and also gives a futuristic feel to it. I think that this is the most awesome looking BD movie to this day and this would definately be the blu-ray to show of my system.

The only small complain is about the camera focus not being always right. The movie looks very good for the most part but when people are talking and the camera zooms to a face the focus is just not right and the face looks blurry. Though the movie plays a lot with camera focus and the effect looks like it is made on purpose so i didnt see it as a fault. It is just something that catched my eye as the movie is so sharp otherwise. The effect can bee seen in Apple HD trailer 3 at 00:00:20.

And then there is the AQ. I really waited to hear what the new Star Trek would sound like and as a big summer blockbuster i waited it to just explode around me with constant bass from the begining to the end (again like Transformers). I was really surprised as this was not the case. Dont get me wrong i do think this is yet again on of the best sounding BD movies there is.

So lets start from the dialog which is very clear and can be easily heard even though there are a lot of action going on. Surrounds are constantly in use but not just for effects. They really create amazing ambiens and atmosphere even during the quietest moments and it feels as you are constantly in the movie. Being in the middle of a huge spaceship firefight, walking in to a bar or standing on the bridge of USS Enterprise sounds exactly like it should. It is the amount of variety that really makes it shine. Front speakers sounded also amazing playing the orchestral score and other effect.

So what really surprised me was the sound design. It is not constant explosion and bass but there are also a lot of quieter moments. Being used to these AD/HD soundtracks in action movies it was a very nice change. Less seems to really be more as now it is possible to really hear all different kind of cool effect with their small nuances. Hearing a closing ion storm in deep space did put a big smile on my face. The dynamics are just perfect. And when the first torpedos are fired the low bass put even bigger smile on my face as it shooked my sofa. Still the effects are never overpowering. But still this is not the LOUDEST track out there but i think it is the most sophisticated and best sounding for an action movie(might sound dull but crank up the volume and you understand what i mean).

There was my first feelings about the movie. Remember that i have only seen a half of the movie but i think it did give a good picture what the rest of the movie is like. So in few words, if you are going to buy only one blu-ray movie then Star Trek it is. There is just no other movie that comes even close to what Star Trek visually looks like, it is also one of the sharpest and best looking video transfers and sound just incredible.

And for the movie itself (first half) it is at least a very strong 9 when it comes to action scifi movies. Definately one of the best movies of this year.

I have to make a small update as today i watched Star Trek again and compared it to Transformers few times. What goes to PQ is that it looks very close to Transformers. They are both very colorful, sharp and vivid. But in Star Trek even though it has as vivid colors and lights as Transformers it also has a lot more natural look to it. Skincolors look much much better and everything looks just as they should unlike in some parts in Transformers. It also looks like Star Trek would have just a little sharper image though this might be because of the much more natural skintone/detail and very nice looking use of depth of field. Having said that i would rank Star Trek as the number one best looking blu-ray at the moment.

And about AQ there was something wrong with my system as i had to put up the volume much higher than usual. Today everything sounded as they should but it didnt effect to what i said about the sound design. The soundtrack is just awesome being full of very low and strong bass effects, surrounding ambiense and very clear dialog. All the speakers are constantly in good use even in the quieter moments. It is simply very fun, dynamic and active soundtrack with a lot of power. I would definately say that Star Treks soundtrack is at the very top movies regarding to audio quality.

In my opinion the lens flares and the usage of depth of field looked extremely good in this movie and is something that really separates Star Trek from other BD releases. BD handels those effects really well and they add a lot to the movies atmosphere. I understand that some people prefer movies to look absolutely clean (free of lens flares and so on) but for me that is when the movie loses a great deal of its impact. For people who really want to experience their movies as they are ment to be i bet they are going to love how Star Trek looks like.

And for people who are wondering if Star Trek is a safe buy, yes it is.

From all this summers huge action movie blockbusters it is the best. PQ wise it is the Best looking movie at the moment. The image is incredibly sharp, vivid, colorful and natural and the scenes from the movie itself are just jaw-dropping. There is just no other movie that looks as good as Star Trek as it looks so good in so many ways.

AQ is equally impressive. One of the most fun and active soundtracks i have ever heard. All the speakers are constantly in good use and the track it self is very dynamic, full of low bass, amazing ambiense, clear dialog and cool effects. It is just the perfect soundtrack and is competing for the place of the best sounding movie todate.

I would be ashamed if i would buy a movie like GI-Joe or Wolverine but would leave movie like Star Trek in the shelf.
Definately a must buy.

I went to see the movie as a unbiased Star Wars fan, never having seen Star Trek. And I WAS BLOWN AWAY. Pre-ordered, and getting on the first day. Especially after that perfect 5.0 review!!

Just finished the review also. Cannot wait for this to get released

It was very very good. Best that Trek has to offer, managing to edge out First Contact.

It might be an amazing disc but too bad the story, plot and acting are terrible.

Seriously, give it up. I would be a rich man if I made money every single time you posted that you thought this was a turkey, the story was bad, the acting was bad, the older ones were better, etc. Maybe we need to make a third Star Trek thread so you can post in there about how much the movie sucked IN YOUR OPINION. I find it amazing that somebody would spend this much time crapping on a movie they didn't even like when they could be doing something useful with their life.
