I hope Star Trek is amazing with the transfer too, it looked gorgeous in the theaters.
The thing is, Blade Runner isn't a perfect movie either. It looks fantastic (iconic even) and sounds wonderful (mostly due to Vangelis' sublime score) but the plot is paper thin (policeman tracks down 4 bad guys and kills them, then finds out he might be a bad guy himself) and the pacing is boring as hell. It bombed when it was originally released and took, how many, four goes to get it right on home video?

Even Harrison Ford hates it!!

Mmmmm... you'll notice that many of those 95% scores are followed up with comments that resemble the negative comments found on this board, mostly relating to the plot weaknesses.

Well see i agree with you that the pacing is slow and the plot can be thin for the average viewr. But if you arent a fan of the genre the film itself wont appeal to you. Hell the film itself doesnt appeal to many viewers. Its not an action movie but more of an atmospheric movie, but it sure does have great set pieces.

It bombed in theaters because the time it when it was released was far too soon for audiences to comprehend what the film means. But the movie has aged well because of the re-releases, the final cut being the best cut out of em all. With that being said, unless you read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", and book material that the film took cues from then you wont really understand the plot to its full extent. I mean the film even changed the way we view robots/androids and has influenced science fiction in so many ways. The plot actually is deeper if you take time to research about it.

Hmm interessting, i've never seen any StarTrek movie, it just wasn't my taste.
But a perfect review? Do i have to watch the other SrarTrek movies before i can watch the new one? Or is it ok if i just go watch the new StarTrek movie?

Is it a prequel or a sequel? Cause im seeing that "spoke" guy or whatever his name is I remember him.

It tries to be both, but is neither really. A prequel would suggest that is leads into 60s Star Trek which it doesn't. It's more of a sequel I suppose because it follows a narrative created by "Spock Prime". It's Star Trek XI.

Well if ya scroll up we answered this question. But no you dont need to know anything about the Star Trek Universe to understand this film. If you know about the characters it helps because their are a lot of nods to them in the film
--The movie itself can be considered a remake of the Star Trek universe because... (gets little complicated), the film takes place in a different parallel universe of the star trek universe. This is because of the theory that time traveling can cause the formation of another parallel time universe thats the same as before but takes on its on path.
--So no its not a prequel or a sequel but like a remake. The film itself will make you better understand this. (Spock basically tells you about this)

I've never seen a Trek movie and hate TOS, I didn't feel too out of the loop though. I don't know if my lack of experience with Trek is what made me think certain aspects of the plot were mind-bogglingly stupid but I enjoyed it for what it is, which is a fun sci-fi action flick.

Which, of course, you shouldn't have to do. If a movie doesn't work on its own terms then it's a flawed movie.

Speaking of which, I enjoy the heck of Titanic but L.A. Confidential has held up way better over the years. The dialogue, acting, and story are much better executed. I do think Cameron deserved Best Director, but L.A. Confidential deserved Best Picture.

What? A movie is like a novel, it presents you the idea. If you cant interpret the ideas or have difficulty getting involved with its plot then you research about it.
--But its your opinion, if you didnt like the film for its plot then you simply dont like it. But for people that enjoy that genre, its a great film.

Science Fiction is my number 1 favourite genre. I live and breath it. But Blade Runner is okay at best.

It will be nominated because there are 10 spots this year, which is a direct result of populist outrage at WALL-E and The Dark Knight not getting nominated last year. So they doubled the number of nominated films this year, which is a joke in my opinion.

I don't really think you did anything wrong. I think you just got lumped into the warning for Elvis.

Indeed. LA Confidential should have got Best Score too. Goldsmith kicked Horner's ass in 97 as he did in virtually every other year. If it hadn't been for that bloody song...

I love Titanic's music (except for that song), but I agree that L.A. probably should have won for Best Score too. And I'm still flabbergasted that Guy Pearce wasn't nominated for either L.A. Confidential or Memento. He was incredible in both of those movies.

I think all this banter is great, no matter what side people take.

Star Trek 2009 is as much a fun-hearted film as it is dramatic - maybe even more so! Nope, you don't have to be acquainted with the original series or the original movies. In fact, it's a decent lead-in. It's a lock - day 1 purchase!

That sounds like just what the doctor ordered. After a hard day at the office, I just want to escape. Any depth to the writing or acting is a bonus, but I'm not going in with major expectations despite the great reviews.
