Thought of resurrecting this thread. Reason ?
Watched Bhool Bhoolayia BR tonight and also watched OSO yesterday and would like share my thoughts after so much has been written the quality of the Eros titles. First, OSO has impressive PQ and looked great yesterday on my 1080p PJ on a 90 inch screen. Today, when I popped in the Bhool bhulaiya disc I was just waiting to get shocked as per reports here. And you guys are right. Up to the movie home page everything looked great and I was just thinking this looks ok... As soon I played the movie, the first thing that happened was the black scrren immediately turned greyish - the black floor was raised in the movie encoding. I could see the following elements badly affected due to this 1. Blacks - washed out 2. Contrast - picture with no depth 3. Colour - very flat 4. Sharpness - soft and no depth Overall it was indeed looking like upscaled DVD. I got really mad and started thinking how could Eros release such a rubbish transfer. At this point an idea came to my mind. I went to my BD players settings and changed the HDMI setting from auto to the RGB mode that limits the range. Normallly, this mode by default clipps blacks and white and the image turns darker and enforces a RGB(full range) and RGB Video (limited range) on my PJ. With this change and my PJ set to RGB Video, the image changed dramatically and it looked great. Every aspect of the image became clearer and it was just like watching a good BR. To me, some scenes looked much better than OSO disc and it looked like a good transfer. I am just thinking if the authoring was done using the wrong color space set at the monitor for review or while doing the encoding. Coz, with the HDMI changed settings, I really enjoyed the disc. Colors , contrast, blacks and shadow detail all looked great and it didn't looked like upscaled DVD. Detail , sharpness was really good. Agree it could be better, but I have seen many Hollywood transfers which are not as good. Appreciate anyone who owns this disc to report back here after playing with the HDMI settings. I think you will be surprised. |
