My wife used to watch TV with the TV speakers only. Once she listened to some shows in 5.1, she now uses 5.1 more often. Your wife might do the same once she experiences 5.1 sound.

Connect the Cable box to the TV with component cables if you still want to use the TV speakers for TV shows.
