Question PS4 in 2011 (any truth)

Is there any truth in the possibility of a PS4 in 2011? This was posted on another forum.

That's considered the time it will be a viable platform for developping for. The PS/2 still is, so its clock is still running.

The time between introduction of new machines is a different concept. That had been 4 years or so, but I think Sony was hoping to extend that to 5-7. 2011 would be five years.

Hopefully never. With the amount of money they keep dumping into the 360 I think they may seriously consider calling it quits after the 360.

But, if Microsoft is going to move forward with a new system, I think that action is what will motivate Sony to get the ball rolling with the PS4 more than anything else.

they have yet to make a profit of their gaming division... they're still bleeding red after 7 years... and Halo 3 hasn't that much.

my belief is that sony will announce around 2010, that ps4 will be here in 2012, itll get delayed til late 2013 and then ps3 and ps4 will coexist for about 3 years before ps3 support is droped in 2016. Thats what has happened with ps/ps2 and ps2/ps3.

yeah I think with previous systems it was 4 years but now with the abilities of the ps3 and even 360 in some cases and the size of disks now they arent forced to look for something newer... Id say with ps3 hitting its big stride in coming years it will be around 6 to maybe 8 years b4 we see a new one!

PS4 will be an easier feat for Sony than XB720 (or whatever its called) will be for Microsoft. Sony just has to throw more powerful cell processors at PS4 and your pretty much kicking arse. For one, cell programmers will probably not have to learn anything new at all.

Sony's vision for the future is the one thats more future proof.

this is what i expect out of ps4. i believe ken already said that ps4 would likely use cell processors and that ps3 was all about reducing the costs so they could put multiple (like 6 or 7) cell processors in a ps4. expect a BD200 reader, i do belive that physical media will be used as people would need a massive harddrive to be able to store, next next gen games. it is possible that instead of a BD200 reader it will have holographic disc reader. 2GB flash memory. 250GB HDD, have no clue what the GPU will look like, but it will be powerful. price:600 again. 2 HDMI ports, 4 USB,

Microsoft needs about 10 HALO 3 type high-profile releases just to break even for their RROD fiasco with the 360. Profitability will NEVER happen in the lifetime of the 360.

The only thing Microsoft can hope for is that they have their name out there and in homes in a capacity other than computers. They may be able to shift/expand their focus from the gaming sector into the entertainment sector a bit more and get a lot of their gaming customers to follow. Unfortunately, Microsoft's rep right now, as far as gaming hardware, is in the toilet. If Microsoft were to release a new console/media center I will not buy it. My current 360 is in the shop and I will no longer support a Microsoft product outside of the computer sector. Halos be damned.

I think that Nintendo is the real competition in the hi-def gaming sector. "What? The Nintendo Wii is not even hi-def!", you say. Let me explain:
Nintendo does not have nearly as much R&D in their system as Sony or Microsoft. Nintendo has been making a profit from the Wii since the day of launch. I can almost guarantee you that Nintendo has a console in the works that will directly compete with both Sony and Microsoft in the hi-def gaming sector. Hardware prices are coming down while the tech goes up. When it becomes PROFITABLE for Nintendo to release a PS3-type system, then it WILL HAPPEN. I'll bet it happens within the next 4 years.

WHEN this happens I think Microsoft may just throw up it's collective arms and call it quits.

im not sure if itll be called ps4. i seriously think they need to change the name into something that appeals to a more mature part of people, while still having a fun name for teens. think about all the older people out there who simply won't buy a ps3, because its a playstation, and playstation is a gaming console, and they don't game, so why do they need a gaming console. the ps3 is a machine that does so much more than gaming so drop the strictly gaming name. im really starting to question the brand name loyalty of the term playstation as its not doing well, so i don't think that changing the name would be such a big deal based on brand recognition. if ps3 flops it would probably be beneficial to change the name.

I agree with everything you said stockstar1138 except the name comment. I think Sony will never get rid of the Playstation name. They may get rid of the numbers in the next system and call the system something like this "Sony Playstation (insert name)". I would really like to see the next system come out after 2012. They need to start proving their statements of 10 year life cycles with not talking about a new system until the 8th year in a consoles life span so when it does arrive it will be around the 10th or 11th year. With technology increasing at a rapid pace, I don't see why this would be a problem. If Sony was smart their next system would include some type of advanced Blu-Ray player and after the new system launches start work on the next format war and that system would include the new format.

I seems to think that it will be true. just because sony said ps3 has 10 years of lifespan, doesn't mean they will wait for 10 years to release. PS1 has ten years of lifespan, and they released PS2 just in PS1's sixth year
