Is Public Enemies worth a blind buy? - Blu-ray Forum

As much as I loved this movie and Michael Mann is one of my favorite directors, I would say no. If you like Michael Mann's other films that venture into the same territory, Heat, Collateral, Miami Vice, then I would say maybe. If you're not familiar with his work, he expects a lot from his audiences and does not explain much. He just throws you right in with no exposition. I personally love him for that.

I'm not sure but all i know is i never got that memo lol. I just rent if im not that sure or could let a friend of mine rent it and watch it with them.

I'm gonna tell you I'm not a fan of the movie, I think the acting and action scenes were fantastic, but there's zero character and very little plot running though the movie, you haven't got a clue who the characters are and you are asked to care for them when they

, but you really just don't give a damn. It's a shame because it should be a good movie, but it just isn't.

i just finished watching it with my daughter, we loved it. well done and excellent LFE with the gun fire sequences! the movie was itself was good. 5 . 5 on the AQ!

It's definitely in my top 10 of the year, but I'm a big Michael Mann fan. Though even I'd say it's not a blind buy, simply because of all the comments on here and all of the reviews. You probably wouldn't like it as much as I do, though hopefully you do.

It really depends, I mean if you're a big fan of Gangster films then I'd have to say it's probably worth a blind buy, but it's definitely more of a new age take on the genre, ala "Road to Perdition" or "Miller's Crossing". I loved those movies though, and I felt Mann's take on it was both realistic and very well directed. He pulled out all the stops and did not really disappoint, although I would not go so far as to say what Peter Travers said about it: "re-invents the gangster genre". It definitely does not re-invent anything, but it's a very good gangster flick done very well.

I honestly don't know why so many people dislike it. The lack of action perhaps? Just because it's a gangster flick doesn't mean there's going to be a ton of action in it....it's based on a true story and Mann is taking a realistic approach to it, so of course it's going to be more REALISTIC and not more....explosion filled.

Bale finally got out of his "Batman" character for Public Enemies and pretty much upstaged Depp. I love it when supporting actors upstage the lead characters. Regardless, if your ideal Gangster flick is "Scarface" and you want to see something with a lot of explosions, watch something by Michael Bay -- but if you want a gangster flick that's a little more serious and psychological then this might just be for you.
