I like the status bar that shows all of the specs of the video, such as codec, bitrates and such.

While I'm sure it can, our requests for specific product testing is probably driving the man mad! He just wants to play games and BDs!

A USB HDD with .TS files and various other media files like AAC and MP3 (Does it do WMA?) would be a good try, or a networked computer with those files.

Bit late to this thread.

At $499.99 I guarantee this will be a better video player than the Samsung BD-P1000 at $250 or more extra. I'd put money on it. If you can find one, grab it.

Just don't pay $1000 for one off ebay.

OK, I put up two more pictures, one shows the options while playing a blu-ray movie (kinda like the PS2 had), the other shows the information display while playing a blu-ray movie. It's pretty cumbersome to do anything other than basic commands (pause for example is mapped to the Start button so that's easy) without a remote control (just like the PS2 was).
I tried a USB pen-drive and it detected it just fine. I'll put on some video files and see what it can play. According to the manual any 'USB Mass Storage' class device can be used.
This system has system software version 1.00 which is what the first shipment will probably have. There is an online page (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/) that already talks about 1.10 so I'm sure pretty soon after launch we'll see an update.

Do you know if the PS3 upscales or upconverts PS2 games?

With the current version (1.00) it does not.

Fair enough. As long as backwards compatibility is there and solid vs. the way MS has handled the 360's BC issues...It's all good.

For some reason it won't show any of the media files that are on my memory stick, it detects the device though. Not sure if it is a firmware issue or there needs to be some naming/directory structure..the online manual is not available yet and the printed one is not very helpful in this matter. Unfortunately I don't have a USB HDD (I really need a friend at Best Buy or something )
Also, I did a quick timing on the blu-ray loading times, it took about 5 seconds for the disk icon to show up on the screen after I inserted it, then another 10 seconds until the first movie images appeared after I clicked on it. Not sure how this compares to other players.

So I put in the disc, go to the fridge and grab a cold Red Stripe, then by the time I get back my movie is ready to start?
Sounds excellent to me.
But seriously, those load times sound just fine.

Maybe the device is defective? You might want to try other memory cards just in case.

WMA is a no-go. So those with a Zune would be tuned out. Another reason MS doesn't like the PS3

I think 15 seconds is fine because within those times, the drive has to recognize if it's a CD format (of all variants), a DVD (of all variants), an SACD or a BD (BD-ROM/R). Tough job to recognize all those formats.

That's at least 2x faster than the Samsung (even with the firmware upgrade).

Oh, and any rumors about the unit being noisy or hot are totally untrue. It's extremely quiet and doesn't generate excessive heat at all after playing for an hour straight (for example my SA 8300HD cable box generates way more heat).

Have you been able to make any kind of comparision on load times for PS2 games on a PS2 vs. a PS3?

I'm just kind of curious to see if you get a little boost there or not.

Thanks!

OK Guys, here's what's inside of a PS3 (you might have to copy and paste the URLs because for some reason they don't work when clicked on)

Blu-Ray drive bottom:

Blue-Ray bottom closeup (most chips seem custom and branded Sony Comp. Ent. Int., the big one too that's covered on the picture):

Yo K! The link now says "You don't have permission to access ... on this server." Put it back together and upgrade the firmware. We wanna hear how it plays BD movies.

Yeah, as I said you have to copy and paste the URLs in your browser window.
I already upgraded the firmware though...unfortunately I don't have a good enough TV set to do a real BD movie test/comparison...

Question HDMI 1.3 Compatibility

To benefit from all this amazing technology will require a 1080p display or 1080p projector, a receiver or pre-amp/processor, a high definition dvd player, and either a satellite receiver or cable box, all equiped with HDMI 1.3. I've been stashing away my acorns for their arrival since June. By June next year I'll be standing on the pinnicle of home entertainment. See how patient I am

Jim
I am about to buy my first HDTV and because of the timing of high-definition DVD it seems to make no sense to purchase anything but a 1080p display. (You can comment on that strategy if you want--I AM a novice.) BUT when reading about HDMI 1.3, I get confused. I am not an audiophile, and so I am not concerned about the advantages there, but what about video? Will I regret buying a 1080p set with current HDMI specs (1.1, 1.2 or whatever they are)? And is it likely that it would be firmware upgradeable? Thx, for your input.
