I've know this subject has been covered but I can't seem to find a difinitive yes or no on the subjust so I will ask outright . . . True or False ...when playing a blu-ray DVD my PS3 can display [edit] 1080i [edit] thru component outputs.

False. All Blu-ray players are restricted to 1080i using analog outputs. If you want 1080p you'll need to use HDMI. The PS3 can output 1080p over component for games and the XMB however.

Not really that big a deal. On a 53" screen the differncence between 720p, 1080i or 1080p is not that big a deal. They will all look great with the actual quality of the encode (Blu-ray) or broadcast trasmission compression (HDTV) being the critical factor.

thanks for the info folks. I was just curious because I was watching "300" (my first Blu-ray movie) the other day and it failed to impress me. I thought it would blow me away but I gotta say that watching CSI from my cable box looked better to me. I'm getting a new LCD soon anyway but just wanted to know if I should buy more movies or wait til i get the new TV.

Well if your tv has no HDMI, you are stuck with 1080i a the best for films. 1080p is a lot more demanding but many will not notice the difference. A single frame from a show will look identical, and for that matter, a lot of things will look the same. All HD tv channels are in 1080i (at the greatest) and the main 2 things you will notice that 1080i has that 1080p does not would be... motion interlacing (where a moving object separates into interlacing lines rather than smooth transition from frame to frame) and "moire" pattern effects on clothes and such (where a small pattern such as strips on a suit or a decorative blouse can cause a strange effect on the screen that stands out from everything else, it is unsightly and most distracting for me). These are only seen in movement and most people ignore or just can't see the difference.

You mean the one where they compared the Spanish SD DVD to HD downscaled to SD so you could see how bad the DVD really was?

I agree. I had to buy a new TV with HDMI Imputes, well worth it though if you want the best possible picture!

I confirmed this last night. Bought me a 52" Sony XBR and I am getting 1080i through components but not the 1080p that "The Reaping" says it has. Thanks again for the info fellas. |

300 on DVD is BAD... Grain is Macroblock .... with is there most of the movie.. LOL!
i saw 300 at IMAX.... i had my shovel with me.. Personnally i don't mind the fake grain to 'hide' CGI... otherwise it might as look as crappy as King Kong on HD DVD (Superb PQ, but laughfable and WORST CGI effect + HUMAN EVER!) |
