I don't know anything about those players. The one thing I can recommend is checking out the new 40gb PS3 that is coming out in a few weeks. For $399 it is an excellent and advanced Blu-ray player considering its ability to be upgradeable in the near future. I apologize I can't provide any help with the Sony and Samsung standalone units.

I own a Samsung. Out of the two choices, and if I had to buy another one today, I'd probably opt for Sony. Samsung is just a bit too quirky for me, and their customer service reps are really out in left field on things.

You talking about the S300-sony & the 1200 or the 1400-sammy?

If it's a choice between the BDP-S300 and the Samsung BD-P1400 then go with the Samsung.

It's currently the only player on either side of the format war capable of outputting DTS-HD Master Audio as bitstream.

I had the samsung 1000 but just recently bought the samsung 1400 and i love it... it is 10x better than the 1000, the load times are half as long as the 1000. I would recommend the 1400

There are many threads out there that has reviews on both players i suggest checking those out as well.

Hope this helps

Sometimes I put a disc in, and it locks on 1080p just fine. Other times it locks on 720p or 480i. Have to turn the machine off and restart, then it stays locked on 1080p.

Sometimes I'll put a disc in, it will read for a while, and then eject the disc stating it cannot be played. Turn the machine off and reinsert the disc and it's good to go.

This is on the BDP1000 (the first generation Samsung). I don't know about the 1200 or 1400 models.

Customer service from Samsung is really a hoot. I think most of them sit around all day hitting the bong, and whoever is the highest has to man the phones.

Default Maybe Samsung

I have the S300 cause I got a good deal on it. If you can avoid it go with the Samsung, cause the Sony S300 does not have the BEST sound available and takes a bit longer loading. If you like Sony, than get it, the S300 isn't such a bad player. The Samsung would match your TV a bit better though, they use that nice shiny black finish.

...Sony does have great tech support. They normally don't make one wait for ages and usually solve the issue. I agree, the S300 looks nice.

What models? If the Samsung 1400 is the Samsung player, then I would go with that. Otherwise, I'd recommend the Sony.

Edit: To a mod... can this be moved to the Blu-ray players section?

If you must pick between Sony and Samsung that are currently available then the BD-P1400 would be the most sensible purchase. Now, if you can wait a little bit then Sony's BDP-S500 may be a superior player, but at a significantly higher price.

No way that the 500 is a better player just becuase of the DTS HD MA factor. It cannot send it in any form. But that is just my opinion.

I said it may be a better player. I did not say that it is in fact a better player. No one knows that, yet obviously.

Cool

I have the Sammy 1200 but I'd go with Sony. Whoever posted about quirks with their players is right. They don't run 100% smoothly, and with the last firmware incident, Samsung was last in line to offer their update.
