Kevinbr100 that is the great feature about Blu-ray players. It is backwards compatible and it plays DVD's and CD's.

The last two generations of Pioneer Laserdisc players were dual format players that played DVD's also. DVD won the format war over Laserdisc in about 2 year time period.

When suggested retail prices on Blu-ray players reach $99.99 or lower it would be very logically for consumer electronics companies to stop making DVD players. If a consumer within 2 or 3 years can purchase a Blu-ray player for around $50, then not that many people are going to complain about not being able to purchase the $29.99 480i DVD players that upconvert to 1080P.
