So anyone think it's still 'too early' to buy into Blu-ray?

I enjoy movies but not until bluray did I actually become an active collector of movies. Cable, VHS and DVD was fine for me if nothing better to do. I was at the BX and saw some bluray playing and was blown away so I bought a TV and BDP and forged a lasting relationship with amazon. As for not enough titles I'd have to say that's a bunch of shit, sure there are movies I want that are not out, but I can't keep up and buy all the ones that I do want.

homi, the curve would work for BD if it wasn't an ongoing and evolving standard. 1.0 didn't have PiP, forced early adopters to reset those curves and expectations. started again w/1.x then 2.0 and now 3-D will reset the curve... ONCE again!

No it won't.

How many people went out and bought a brand new BD player when 1.x and 2.0 came out? How many people are going to run out and spend money on 3D tv? I would say only the super duper die hard must have it all money is not issue people are. Everyone else - no.

Hell, if I was shopping TODAY for a TV, I could care less about 3D. Give me good picture and sound.

Home Theater is not like mobile phones. People don't upgrade to the latest and greatest every 6mos/yr.

well i skipped profile 1.x and wait to buy 2.0. now that 3-D is out, i'm going to grab a HDMI 1.4 player and get rid of my HDMI 1.3 players.

It's not a matter of it being too early, it's just that in the big scheme of things, people just don't care. I know saying this on the blu-ray forums might be tough to swallow, but your opinion is biased because if you are here, you obviously took the blu pill. The average person who probably has less disposable income that most of us, has much more important things to focus on (mortgage, bills, gas, job security etc) than to watch Star Trek in HD, with all the trappings you need to get the full effect (HD panel, surround sound, receiver or prepro/amp etc) They just don't give a damn, really.

I'm an audiophile, I like high end audio - preferably on vinyl. I bet you my bottom dollar that many people on this forum, posting in this thread have an iPod or zune loaded up with mp3s. It certainly isn't too early to dump that garbage in favor of vinyl, FLAC, ALAC etc. You don't care either. We all can't be passionate about the same things. For some, DVD is good enough. For others, mp3 on crappy earbuds is good enough also. I'm fine with that and have accepted it.

well audio is different, for me at least, I have an iPod but I can't stand MP3's either, I use uncompressed AIFF as much as I can. Problem is I ripped all my cd's to mp3 when I first got my original ipod back in 2004 and didn't know any better then and now those cd's are long gone so it's increasingly difficult to come by CD quality copies of the songs I like without actually buying the retail CD's, which where I live is next to impossible anyways and not really worth the extra effort.


But my original post was more reflective as a whole than in general but I guess I really did ask the wrong question. What prompted me in the first place was looking at my list of movies, TV shows, and anime's that I *want* and looking at the complete availability, I guess things did not add up. Sure there are enough good movies that I was ok with adopting when I did, which was just barely last July or August I think. I look at my collection and every time I think of a movie I want on Blu Ray, guess what it's not on Blu Ray. So I keep waiting but the releases keep coming to slow sometimes. Not just Star Wars either, but a lot of stuff. And knowing so many people, ok in fact truth is it's not how many people I know who aren't impressed with Blu Ray as it is I only know 2 other people who even have HDTV's and own Blu Ray, everyone else, while admitting it does look good, usually admits it does not look "good enough" to justify the expense.

So I know as prices come down on TV's and Players more of them will eventually buy in, but it's different than it was with DVD, I was the one who brought the first DVD player into our home, and it took less than 6 months before everyone was buying their own DVD's and selling their VHS movies off. Granted most members of my family kept some VHS tapes and it was a hard sell even with all the advantages for some of them.


Now I brought a Blu Ray into the home, got one for my sister, which did prompt her husband to buy the HDTV, but they looked at the release list and were underwhelmed. Sure her husband easily found a few titles he wanted, but my sister, so far not that many. And my parents have so far only purchased 1 single Blu Ray, Pixar's Cars which was a $30.00 purchase and they have refused to even look at the Blu Ray selections ever since. Stubborn I know but that is the way a lot of people are, they see that 1 or 2 movies they would buy are overpriced and don't bother to look at the discounted stuff. But I am hoping that by the end of this year things will be much better.

A lot of movies that came out on DVD have yet to even get dates for Blu Ray.
