If Pioneer would have stayed in the plasma business I believe new models of Pioneer plasmas would have accepted a 3-D 1080p/48 signal and refreshed the image on the screen at a minimum of 144fps or a higher refresh rate just like all 3-D digital theater presentations. My player is set for 24FPS output, so I can turn off "smoothing" settings. Didn't know that was automatic. Quote:

Quote from Home Theater magazine: "As in other Pioneer sets, the Film Mode (under PureCinema) tells the set how to display film- and video-sourced material. It automatically detects film-based sources and offers three options (plus Off). Standard (interlaced inputs) always feeds the panel 1080p at 60 frames per second. Advanced (all sources except 1080p/60) converts film-based material to a display rate of 72 frames per second (eliminating 3:2 pulldown where present). Smooth (all sources except 1080p/60) is an intermediate option, but I didn’t find it very useful. If the program material is already 1080p/24, as is the case with films on Blu-ray, the set automatically converts it to 1080p/72, regardless of the PureCinema/Film Mode control’s setting." http://hometheatermag.com/flat-panels/pioneer_elite_kuro_pro-141fd_plasma_hd_monitor/index.html The hardware in all existing Pioneers were only designed for 2-D images and it would not be possible to display Cinema quality 3-D. The HDMI 1.3 circuit boards would need to be replaced with HDMI 1.4 and the display circuit that handles frame rate would need to be upgraded to 144fps or higher so that 3-D would work correctly. I cannot see any third party company making a hardware and firmware upgrade kit for the Pioneer (It would not be worth the cost of research and development since It would be too costly). For those that really want 3-D they will need to purchase a new 3-D compatible display and 3-D Blu-ray player (Also new A/V recevier if you want video switching of 3-D signals). Before I consider upgrading any display to 3-D I am going to wait until the 2-D picture quality beats the quality of the 9th generation Pioneer. It might be a few years before there exists a 3-D display that can produce deeper 2-D black levels when compared to the existing Pioneer plasma's. The new 3-D Blu-ray movie format has not even been released yet. When those movies start to come out then I will consider maybe upgrading one TV and BLU-RAY player to 3-D if the 2-D quality can beat the picture quality of a Pioneer. Technically the Pioneers are only a excellent 2-D 1080P displays. Of course many people like how the deep blacks and awesome contrast ratio on the Pioneer's create a excellent illusion of depth.
The following is a quote from the Home Theater review on the PRO-141FD that supports your suggestion of 3-D depth on the Pioneer " The Pioneer was even better with the best Blu-ray Discs. Its most striking quality, which it hinted at with the finest cable stations, is a remarkable illusion of depth. This wasn’t the gimmicky depth you see in 3-D movies or the dreary televised 3-D experiments. (Even on the Pioneer, the 3-D trailer for Monsters vs. Aliens that aired during the Super Bowl looked grim.) Instead, this had a believable depth that you could watch all day without getting a headache. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian on Blu-ray had it. So did Baraka; its jaw-dropping images compensated for its sleep-inducing pace." "That depth comes from a combination of factors: spot-on color, exceptional resolution, and a comfortable (but not excessive) brightness level. But the most important contribution is Pioneer’s industry-leading black levels. Yes, local-dimming LCDs are starting to make inroads, but for overall performance on dark scenes, nothing can beat a Pioneer Kuro. And make no mistake: The better the blacks, the better the subjective image depth, even on bright scenes. The deeper the blacks, the firmer the foundation for all material, from the darkest to the brightest." http://hometheatermag.com/flat-panel...or/index1.html |

Thats exactly what im talking about. No other TV i've seen can do what the pioneer does. Watch speed racer on a kuro, my god, the inky blacks of the 2.39:1 bars combined with the very bright, colorful and sharp PQ of the movie makes it look like the actors are standing in the TV. Its just unbelievable.
