Wireless? Wired? I assume wired since it's a desktop. When it drops connection, what does it do? Display an error? Show "no connection"? Time out on web pages?

Definitely power cycle your modem and router. Even though I don't prefer IE, I wouldn't say "never use it". It works fine. I use it in business settings all the time without much issue.
