So it looks like I'll be holding on to that one until Disney straightens this out with the eventual double-dip.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but has Disney released the DCs of any of their movies on blu-ray that are already available on DVD? From what I can tell Enemy of the State, Con Air, and Crimson Tide all received DCs on DVD, yet their Blus are all theatrical-only cuts. Add Tombstone to this list now, also. I am very disappointed.
Interesting? You are going to forgo having this in high def with lossless sound because it's missing 4 minutes from the Director's Cut?

It's one of my top 10 all time movies. I currently own the Vista Series version but I am not about to pass up the opportunity to get this in HD.

When a better version comes along with the Director's Cut and more extras I will just sell the current version and upgrade for a few bucks when that day comes.

For “me” 1080p high def and lossless sound > missing 4 minutes and extras

Yeah, I'd really like to know what's in that 4 minutes of the director's cut that everyone finds so vital.

Wait the directors cut is 4 minutes longer really? I have not seen the movie in so long i would not even know what 4 minutes is the DC footage.

  • a somber soliloquy by Doc quoting Kublai Khan;
  • a scene explaining Kate's sudden disapearance from the film, with Doc stressing the importance of friendship;
  • a scene with McMasters and the Cowboys meeting one last time. A small scene showing the graphic result of that meeting has been re-inserted with the line "They got McMasters!" being moved into this small insert.
It's not a huge addition and not worth missing Tombstone in all its 1080p glory.

Odd that the IMDB info you quoted says 9 minutes difference when the runtimes from IMDB show 130 minutes vs 134 minutes for the DC.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108358/dvd

Maybe they used some sort of compression to squeeze 9 minutes worth of extra scenes into 4.

Day one for me either way as my copy is pre-ordered on Amazon.

See the attached link for the difference between in the DC.

There are only 6 minutes of added footage.

There is not a good reason to hold off until the DC. This will be a nice upgrade. They did not add anything that was major or story changing.

Surprised that the bd is using the theatrical version. Very disappointing imo.

Why? It's only a 4 minute difference.

I think the dc is superior, and it's the version that I currently own on dvd. I would miss the additional six minutes...

I haven't seen this movie in a long time. I doubt I'll notice the 6 min difference in the DC.

No reason they couldn't have just put both versions of the film on 1 disc using seamless branching...Here's another perfect example of Blu-ray 'shooting itself in the foot,' especially at a time when it's so crucial for the format to succeed...'Tombstone' is one of those rare films that has a massive fanbase, many of whom are outside of the typical 'sci-fi/fantasy' group that Blu-ray has typically catered to in the past. By offering both versions of the film in one 'definitive' set, a title like this could actually boost sales of players, while drawing in a vast amount of new customers!

But to only offer the theatrical version, in order to force a double-dip later, and at the same time, leave off so many bonus features that were available on the 2-disc DVD Vista series (especially the Cosmatos commentary), is going to have people avoiding this release like the plague...Bad, bad marketing in my opinion...I personally won't be bothering with this one

Oh please, people that are interested in the movie will be buying it regardless of whether or not it is missing 4 minutes and extras.

It's not definitive but it will be the best picture and audio quality the film has ever been available.

I love Tombstone, one of my top 10 movies, but to suggest this title missing special features and 4 minutes will somehow change the course of the acceptance of Blu-ray is laughable.

For the at least 12 people in the world waiting to buy a Blu-ray player to view this movie the missing minutes and extras will have exactly ZERO effect on them.

I have to say I disagree with you overall, but respect your opinions. I for one, am very interested in the movie, but will not be buying it (even though it's one of my favorite westerns)...and I personally feel that Blu-ray, with everything it's capable of offering, is really selling itself short in instances like these, which is rather disappointing.
