I love the idea. The area below might need to be a little open to be more effective, but I can't argue with the looks. I'm going to run to home depot and do a thinner version of what you've done to see how it turns out. Thanks crazy.

It's built, filled, sanded and I just applied the first side of stain. I'm going to clean the house up and see if I can't find the camera. I decided to go with a simple moulding for the riser, not quite as ostentatious as Crazy's. I even rebuilt the frame for them. I'm making them a little smaller this time, I was testing the old riser out and I think I brought it up a couple inches too far. I'm going to use some left over stain I have from my speakers, see how it turns out. I'll likely use the same clear coat for a protective finish as well. Thanks again crazy for the idea, so far it's turned out great.

![]() ![]() Sorry the image is crap, I'll get a better one once it's closer to being finished. I'm in the process of applying the finish to it. Edit: Man, the image enhancement really destroys some pictures. I just had to reupload the image. Last edited by kareface; 03-19-2010 at 07:05 AM. |

![]() ![]() Clear coat is done, top is on. I should be able to finish it all tomorrow. I just need to apply the dampening foam to the top and bottom of the riser, build the screens with the speaker grill cloth and fill the space with low density fiber glass. ![]() I'm planing to repaint my subs soon, I think they'll look really nice once they match the stands. |

Neither do I really, lol. It's pretty much just just learning as I go. I'm better in a lab or in front of a computer then I am with power tools. I learn fast tho.
Thanks for all the feedback. I was happy with the results of the first riser on paper, but I fully agree it was gaudy. Thanks again for the idea Crazy, I even mimicked your construction method, lol. It was faster then trying to rig the old risers to work with the new design. I must admit, it's pretty sturdy. Held my weight easily. BD, in a few months I'm planing to build some membrane resonators for the room. At the same time I'm either going to replace the low density fiberglass in the risers with a tuned membrane or a pressure equalizer. So postpone any testing until then, lol. It's in the works, I'm already collaborating on the project to work out ideal materials and a test rig. However I have a few things that I'll be working on before that, like repainting the subs and building some normal fiberglass panels for the room. I still need some suggestions for possible airbrush artwork to go on the subs. I was thinking something like musical notes or an instrument, but I don't have my heart set on anything yet. |

A little over 20", I'm too lazy to go measure right now, lol. You don't have to use speaker grill cloth, anything that you can breathe easily through is sufficient. Just make sure to fill the space with the lowest density fiberglass you can. If you can't use a tuned resonator or a pressure dampening system, the best thing you can do for LF seems to be low density fiberglass. I'm planing to thoroughly test several solutions this summer.
